The Guitar Magnet

My 16 year old grandson Shawn visited us last week and he let it be known that he was learning to play the guitar.

Amazingly, he was soon peppered with all sorts of offers of stringed instruments: ukuleles on up through acoustics to electric with amp. Even a steel guitar. Of course he jammed.

We did not plan it and just marveled at the burgeoning bountiful serendipity.

For example, we visited a guitar shop, The Grateful Guitar, and he was sampling an acoustic and the Manager asked if she could video and live stream his "performance" and she did and we marvel at his ever mounting number of Facebook views.

He has been playing for less than 6 months and can hardly read music, but nonetheless, day by day, his improvement is perceptible.

And why not? After all, he's the Guitar Magnet!!!

Shawn must have had a wonderful time, and I’m sure Grandpa “kvelled”. (That’s a legal term.)

There's got to be more to the story. I'm guessing he's also a really nice kid too.

Another talented grandchild for you. What a joy it must be to revel in the achievements of that generation (without having to change any diapers - ha ha ha) just all the fun stuff.

Don’t worry about his not being able to read music. Some of our great artists couldn’t read music such as Ray Charles. Stevie Wonder. George Shearing etc

I love guitars. All types. Truly fantastic to see such an ingenue at this early age. One of my favorite guitarists, Jerry Garcia, played acoustic, electric, mandolin, banjo and steel guitar. The ability to shift from folk to electric to country never ceases to astound me. Jerry’s band mate Bob Weir, never learned how to read music and yet he became a very accomplished guitarist in his own right.

Very nice, he already has the musician look.

By the way, Joe has taken up guitar too. He is even taking it as an elective in HS. When my brother Mike passed away in 2018, he was an accomplished guitar player and had played in several local bands. He had several very nice guitars. I kept a 1995 Acoustic cut away Tayler which I ended up giving to Joe. An expensive first guitar but he loves it. Glad to see it being used.

More music to enjoy at a family level is terrific! Rock on for Gdpa!

Clearly Shawn has a flare. Just maybe he has bumped into his destiny. He will know once he passes 1000 hours of practice. Regardless, he has a gift to share.
