The Challenge

The headlines are startling, although not unexpected. Among students in grades 3 through 8 on Long Island less than 40% passed Math and less than 50% passed English in recent standardized tests. Although I’m not a fan of standardized testing, the results are undeniable.
The effects of the pandemic are many. We have suffered personally - directly and indirectly. The challenge facing our children must find its place in our recovery. It is the challenge of the generation.

Every generation has its challenges. I wonder if had they taken such exams during war times or during the "great" depression, if there was a difference. And imagine how negative the impact would have been without technology. Kids are resilient and hopefully the teachers and parents will recognize the challenges and help them capitalize on their resilience, catch up academically and help them heal emotionally.

Too many distractions for the kids (se Fred K comment), not enough discipline or consequence for poor grades, and a system that is antiquated, inefficient and mostly indifferent. Sad. Surprised to hear this was a Long Island Stat. I would not be surprised if in the Boroughs as well.

I see it in my students. There is a definite difference. The impacts are only starting to be realized.
