The Last Meal

Categories
Lifestyle

My family and I are not very religious. We do, however, try to adhere to the eating constraints of Passover. Specifically, we will not eat any leavened products during the eight days including bread, cookies, cake etc. We also try not to eat in restaurants during the eight days of Passover.

We do have another tradition affiliated with Passover. The night before the first Seder we go out for the “last meal.” We generally try to make it a meal of food that we will not be eating for the next eight days. This year it was Italian food, which has been, overwhelmingly, the choice for the past few years. Another popular choice for us in the past has also been bagels and lox.

What would be your choice for a meal if you knew you could not eat that food for eight days?

Interesting. My tradition was more after Passover, grabbing Pizza. I do note dinner plans already in place for that eve.

Like you Rona, we had a pre-holiday dining out experience. Growing up in Brooklyn, we didn't have much money but that didn't stop us from enjoying a fun carb full meal of Roll 'N Roaster which still serves fine roast beef sandwiches, amazing crinkle cut sliced disk shaped, fries and to me, one of the best grilled burgers anywhere. It was more of way to get us out of the house as mom prepared the house for a Kosher Passover dinner. But we knew it was the last regular meal. Great memories. Now when occasionally visiting Sheepshead Bay Brooklyn, I am sure to stop there.

The only food I really miss during Passover is my bagel on Sunday mornings after my long run for the week. I am really looking forward to that now as is my cat who always gets a little bit of cream cheese. She is happy with the gefilte fish but still missed her schmear.
