Months ago I expected to draft a blog like this last month. But then that lockout imposed by a clueless commissioner happened. No doubt exists that the collective bargaining agreement reached last week could have been reached without the rancor. Nonetheless this correspondent exudes excitement about the prospect of baseball’s return. I planned to attend the original opening day; luckily for me but not for those who might have bought the original tickets for April 15, my opening day tickets now apply for the new home opener, which also includes the unveiling of the Tom Seaver’s statue and a Jackie Robinson 75th Anniversary commemoration; on the original schedule April 15 was a night game; it is not a day game and that matters here too.

My 2021 pre-season blog noted the unresolved status of the DH; I wrote of whether the lineup included “eight hitters plus a pitcher or nine sluggers” and we know the new CBA provides for a “universal” DH. It remains interesting based on the current crop of players how new manager Buck Showalter will construct his lineup that features slugger Pete Alonso. And there may be further deals to be done to further strengthen the batting order.

The Mets already further strengthened their pitching adding Right-hander Chris Bassitt who was an All-Star last summer before a line-drive to the head took him out; his remarkable recovery include two late September starts; He joins a staff that includes the five Cy Youngs won by Max Scherzer and Jacob deGrom. Could be quite formidable if Cookie Carrasco returns to form and Taijuan Walter pitches more like the starter who made the All-Star team rather than regressed in the second-half. And a number of young pitchers showed promise and may push the vets for starts.

Gotham Goes to Citi FieldI am sure my Yankee fan friends including Friday’s blogger similarly exude optimism. I am “leading” two groups to Citi Field on July 26 when the Mets host the Yankees; One is Gotham; the other my FDR Lodge 613 Knights of Pythias (to benefit its Kings-FDR Tolerance Foundation. Also have a small group attending the retirement of #17 (Keith Hernandez) on July 9.

I am (certainly) ready (for my team) to play!

I feel good about the season (I admit I usually do this time of year.).

Do you?

Right on Corey! Ready to Spring Forward into the belated baseball season, commencing with a home opener honoring the greatest opening day starter ever - only Tom Terrific Seaver started 16(!) opening days (undefeated in his 11 Met opening day starts) - for the greatest opening day team ever (nobody comes close to the Mets' .650 winning percentage). Adding pitching star Bassitt to the greatest - if healthy - 1-2 starting pitcher punch (deGrom - Scherzer) in the history of New York baseball bodes well for a Met return to post-season, and now with a great manager in Showalter and the offensive depth for a long run. Finally, the Met time to win is NOW. See everyone at the Subway Series. Thanks as always Corey for organizing! #LGM #WSOB

You’re right that the delay could have been avoided, don’t know what the Commissioner was thinking in the first place.

The only good thing that came out of it was a universal DH! It’s a better game when the pitcher at least has to TRY to get the ninth batter out.

I can feel your excitement and optimism Corey. Looks like a great year for the Mets. Pitching staff with DH is perfect set up for them. I was at the Jackie Robinson 50th celebration( with my then 10 yr old son). Pres. Clinton and Rachel Robinson declared that MLB would retire number 42 forever. Let's hope for a competitive Subway World Series this year.

So happy for all of you baseball fans that it has been resolved. Play ball!!!

It has been nice seeing my Yankee and Mets friends team up against the commissioner, and it is wonderful when they team up to share games together. Baseball season always brings memories of Tiger games in the snow - seasons filled with anticipation, exhilaration, excitement, and sometimes even disappointment. Such is baseball, such is life. So, as they say, "let the games begin!"

I HOPE for the best, but being an OLD BROOKLYN DODGER fan as Dan said "there is always next year".

Once games begin, fan bitterness will subside. That being said, Yankees do nada whilst Uncle Steve signs his 5th starting player. Could the Mets be joining the Dodgers as the current "Evil Empires?"

Mets cannot be evil; prior honors were not so much evil as not up to the task; I believe they are generous (think Katz Woman's Hospital at LIJ) but just unwilling to recognize their limitations as owners and businesspeople.

Now the Mets got Ottavino, Berkeley Carroll alum where my nephews go. He can strike out Babe Ruth!

I liked seeing certain P's bat; but agree with you; some still like the old-school strategy. As to the commish, believe he had union busing on the brain. Just plain dumb; ditto many of the owners.
Corey Bearak

Life owed Mets fans that after so many years of the Wilpons. Not bad people but very bad owners.
