Ukraine

As bloggers we are supposed to refrain from writing about political issues. In fact, I had another blog written to be posted for today. But the topic seemed trivial considering what we are witnessing happen in Ukraine. And so, I cannot stop myself from sharing my feelings about the horrors that are occurring in Ukraine.

I watch the international news and it so deeply saddens me to see the atrocities the Ukrainian people are enduring. And, yet I am also struck by their bravery and willingness to stand up for their freedom.  And, as Fred observed on Friday, their President’s heroism, coupled with his use of social media to bring attention to the needs of his people is Nobel Prize worthy.

I am in awe of the courage exhibited by the Ukrainian people. And I sit here in my comfortable home, with electricity, internet, heat and food readily available to me and wonder what the average person in the United States can do to help.  Is it donations? Is it posting on social media? Engaging in peaceful demonstrations?

What do you think?

There are many ways to help but still a lot of issues to work through as well.

Tough for so many and just horrific to watch. Sadly, there are likely organizations collecting money that are not real. So a list of the "good" ones would be nice to have.

Resolve to never buy anything Russian until the Putin regime is over. Email and/or call all of your representatives in Congress and demand that we outlaw buying Russian oil. It is estimated that 9% of our oil still comes from Russia. This is something that Nancy Pelosi, Kevin McCarthy and Mitch McConnell agree on. Putin has made all his money through the Russian oil industry. If you think he was making money at $50 a barrel, imagine what he is making today at $140 a barrel. He has absolutely no reason to stop the genocide in Ukraine. I know it may not be popular here, but one year ago the United States was completely energy independent, but now with the killing of oil and gas leases, demonizing fracking and stopping construction of the XL pipeline, we are again dependent on Russia, Iran and Venezuela.

I agree with you and I believe that Biden is going to announce it today. That is something all Americans should agree on. I don't mind paying extra at the pump if it hurts him.
