An Underappreciated New York City Destination!

It seems that people and the media talk up the MOMA and the MET frequently. But, the MCNY does not receive much notice or attention.  The Museum of the City of New York has a lot to offer beyond the fabulous building on Fifth Avenue at 103rd st.

The museum celebrates all things New York City,  The people, the art, the architecture, the music, etc. are all examined beautifully.  A fascinating documentary on the city’s history is part of the permanent exhibit.

Currently, the exhibit about the New York City Music Scene of the 1980’s is explored with photographs, videos, and artifacts.  The range is wide: Madonna, Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, and the Talking Heads are featured.

The most charming show award goes to the Puppets of New York exhibit. You will be brought back to another era.  Seeing Howdy Doody, Lamb Chop, Oscar the Grouch and a host of other puppets will bring back loads of memories.

The museum is only open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday till the Spring. And, if the weather is good, be sure to walk across the street to see the famous Central Park Conservatory Garden.  A great day is guaranteed.

Interesting, thanks Odey for the 411! I saw David Byrne's fabulous concert at the King's Theatre in Brooklyn (2018) totally acoustic with no electricity. It's a must-see if he tours again.

It is a wonderful Museum! And I recommend walking across 5th Avenue to the Conservatory Garden too. Thanks for the report, Odey!

Yes, the MCNY is a hidden treasure, often unseen because it is not a "easy" trip. One of our great museums, I recommend it frequently.

Glad some love it and some want to go. Byrne's Broadway show Utopia is terrific and he does some Talking Heads songs.
Fred you must see the doll in person.

I agree, Odey! It's a very interesting museum. I came across it many years ago. loved it and promised myself to go back but life took over. So thanks for the reminder! I will visit soon.
