How Do you Read?

Categories

A friend recently posted an interesting question on her Facebook feed. “Do you read books in hardcover? Paperback? E-book? Or Audio?” In one of the comments, she had added, “just answer honestly, no judgments.”

I am an avid Kindle reader. As I answered on my friend’s Facebook page, I love the convenience of not having to schlep four books on vacation. I also love the convenience of having a new book readily available after I have finished one.

In reading the comments I understand why my friend had to add that there would be no judgments. Many of the people who answered that they read only hardcovers or paperbacks added comments such as, “that’s the best way to support the author” or “reading on an E-book isn’t real reading.” As an E-book reader I have encountered numerous comments like that before. Interestingly, however, one of my closest and longtime friends works in a bookstore and has never judged me for reading on my Kindle. In fact, she is a steady source of reading recommendations for me.

So, Gotham, do you read books in hardcover? Paperback? E-book? Or Audio?” Just answer honestly, no judgments.

Done it all. I like the idea of studying content and going back to re-read something when that makes sense. That said an audio book in the author's voice, when a biography is nice.

Judgement - wow! Never occurred to me! I read mostly on my iPad or phone. I share a Nook account with my mom, sister and a couple of friends. My book club is pretty much split between audio, ”paper” and downloads. my daughter listens to all of her books through a library app which she found to be far more economical than audible. It’s such a personal and contextual decision! Judgments must be about the people making them! However you take in content, enjoy it!

Multi myself but would like to start audio. My son does audio books in school which further reduces his ability to read on paper quickly. So I am fearful of this affecting his test scores. But as an adult, do as you please, no judgements here.

Funny, depends on my mood. I like them all -- except I haven't adjusted to audio books. Maybe some day.
