3 New Netflix Movies Take Us Places

One of the fascinations of moviegoing, for me, is going to worlds and times that are new. I always try to not know the plot details and I will not provide any spoilers.  Three terrific movies provide such an experience.  Two of them journey to the American past and the other takes us across the ocean to Italy. Try to stay in the dark about the plot twists in these movies in order to enjoy them to the max.

“The Power of the Dog” is an intense depiction of life on a Montana ranch in the 1920’s.  Featuring a great performance by Benedict Cumberbatch, the film, directed by Jane Campion, captures the beauty and the hardships of owning and living on a cattle ranch.  The family relationships are examined and explored with great detail.  It was so good that I would look forward to seeing it again on the big screen.

“Passing” is set in 1920’s Harlem. It is a story of two Black women originally from Chicago. They meet by chance eight years later. One of them, played by Ruth Negga, is passing as black.  The other, Tessa Thompson, is intrigued by her friend’s choice. Their new friendship explores many issues that impact their lives in surprising ways. Directed beautifully by the actress, Rebecca Hall, “Passing” makes New York City look beautiful in gorgeous black and white cinematography. The jazzy musical score elevates the story, too.

“The Hand of God” takes us to the Naples of the 1980’s. The acclaimed Italian director, Paolo Sorrentino, takes an inspired look back on his life.  He explores his family and finds the humor and pathos around their celebrations and challenges.  The film uses the famous World Cup goal, by Naples superstar Diego Maradona, scored on a uncalled hand ball as a metaphor for life.  The family interactions are unforgettable and the beauty of Naples will whet your travel appetite.

Odey, do do you watch Yellowstone or 1883? Both about Montana cattle ranches. Beautiful and well done. We are looking forward to Power of the Dog.

Paul beat me to it. Lol. Yellowstone and its story of origin 1883. Excellent. Also we loved Turn, Washington’s Spies which was about colonial America, and set in Long Island, NYC and Connecticut. (as I recently posted on Nancy‘s blog). Excellent!

Thanks for the reviews, Odey, very helpful. I had heard about Passing and wanted to see it but didn't know it was on Netflix; never heard of Hand of God but I have a fascination with Naples so will definitely watch it; had heard of Power of the Dog but didn't think I would be interested in the setting--you changed my mind. Have not watched anything new lately but this weekend re-watched Jim Jarmusch's Stranger than Paradise--enjoyed the grittiness and the low-key vibe.
