People, Places or Things?

Eleanor Roosevelt said "Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people."

I had the priveldge of visiting two distinct beaches along the New Jersey shore this summer and each beach and its corresponding town carried its own specific vibe. Where does the vibe come from? I believe its a compilation of various energies, but the most influential could be its human population. Standing in line at Sundea's Best, I heard a group of people talking about who bought new boats, which families had golf carts around town and what golf clubs they held membership. Frankly, it was boring, uninteresting and not my flavor of ice cream. Lots of people and events, but it lacked content.

At the second beach, I overheard conversations that included class assignments, start dates for football practice and foreign exchange programs. Two teenagers waited in line for ice cream at Springers, wearing NASA t-shirts and discussed summer school projects in preperation for the upcoming school year. Like a warm comfortable blanket, this was more my flavor. The depth of conversation, the interest in "things" greater then themselves, a curiousity carefully nurtured and respected. YES!

This connection reminded much like the time I attended my first Gotham meeting in NY. Instant connection and being with "my peeps".....

How would you discribe "your crowd"?

Low Key, not too loud, but honest with their opinions. A good debate is always fun, just keep the politics out. I do like the ice cream choice too.

Carly- I like the Roosevelt quote and your observation of the vibes of different crowds. I have literally fallen asleep during some conversations. My crowd? One where the conversation doesn't put me to sleep or wish I was at the dentist instead.

Interestign I would have thougt the young people wodul have been more into the things and the older ones the ideas...

I like you, travel in many groups. Events and Things are temporal and often a fad of the moment. Ideas are timeless and those people who look to the bigger picture are worth every moment you spend with them....like the redhead on line for ice cream….

I have many , "crowds." People I met at all phases of my life. They all have the same ting in common, they're good people.

Love YOUR vibe! The FDR quote is one of my favs. I like my ice cream outside the box. But also find it interesting to taste other flavors by hearing banter at Starbucks, McDonald’s, the supermarket checkout line, the subway. Airports and even on buses.Everything speaks to me.At Starbucks I recently was in line with a Boy Scout Master and his
young teen scouts on their first visit to NYC . He was treating. Not your typical scout Master. Not typical scouts. But hey, whether it’s the asphalt canyons or
or the Grand Canyon, survival skills are in play.
