Dads Over Time

Dads spend twice as much time now with their kids than they did in 1989 and triple the time they spent in 1965. I saw this statistic reported as Father’s Day was coming around last week.

With all of the social and economic issues wrapped around these statistics, they made me think generally about their impact. Putting aside a discussion of the reasons why, this statistic says that today’s generation has the benefit of more active involvement of their fathers. In my estimation, whenever a parent plays an active role, children benefit. This statistic bodes well for the development of our future generations.

I think about the influence of my father in my own life. Admittedly, I’m pretty sure he never changed diapers or cooked dinner (although he was definitely in charge of the barbeque). But he was active, involved and present in my life -- and always, always a role model. If he were raising children today, I’m very sure he would be changing diapers, cooking dinner and even placing a neat ponytail or two for his young daughters.

I like this statistic and look forward to the continuing trend.

I think this is a great statistic too. We share the same experience with our Dads. I would love to see my Dad craft a neat ponytail and put together a cute outfit. I know he could totally do it!

I am seeing it in my practice now a lot more than in the past. dads who want more time, than the typical alternate weekend schedule with their kids. It's refreshing to see a sa lawyer but, unfortunately for the men, the Courts are slow to catch up.

Very interesting statistic. I would have thought the other way, with less time. But that is a good sign.

Dads provide a different perspective on life and parenting . Diane and I have different parenting skills .Not to say one is better than the other . Our biggest discussions revolved around our parenting differences . This Wild assed dad created many a conflict . But the common denominator was always being on the same page with Diane .

I find it very important and where dad's fall short or just not about, all the more important for other positive role players to step in; makes a very big difference.
