Nosferatu the Vampyre
Aug. 29th-Aug. 30 at Midnight at Nitehawk Cinema
136 Metropolitan Ave., Williamsburg, Brooklyn
Vampires have become all the rage lately. But here is the film that is the gold standard for the genre. Newly restored, its cinematic magic, Werner Herzog’s Nosferatu the Vampyre is the most hauntingly beautiful film to ever tackle the Bram Stoker legend of Dracula. As the story goes, Jonathan Harker travels to meet this elusive Count Dracula (played to a stunningly sick effect by Klaus Kinski) in order to secure land deeds in Wismar, Harker’s hometown. Dracula follows him, bringing a wave of plague and destruction along with him, as he searches to steal the heart of Harker’s wife, Lucy. Perfectly paced, hazily dreary, and set to the most evocative score, Herzog’s Nosferatu elegantly intertwines death and love. Wild Child - Doors Tribute
Aug. 9th at 7:00 P.M. at Gramercy Theatre
127 East 23rd St.
Dave Brock's Doors Experience is the L.A.-based act with over 20 years of world tour experience. Faithfully re-creating a live Doors Concert on stage, the music is painstakingly reproduced and combined with the voice, look and essence of Jim Morrison live on stage. Wild Child tries to mirror the depth, energy and emotion of The Doors concerts as they were live back in the late 1960's. The Band also utilizes the same musical instruments live as The Doors did over 40 years ago. Minus5 Ice Bar
Aug. 1st-Aug. 31st at the New York Hilton Midtown
1335 Ave. of the Americas
Hot enough for you so far this summer? Here’s a unique, and pardon the pun, cool way to cool off. Inside the Minus5 Ice Bar, everything in the bar — the chairs, the walls, your glass, the lights — is made out of clear "carvers" ice. The bar gets its name from the temperature: 23 degrees Fahrenheit, or minus 5 degrees Celsius. For $20 admission price, you get gloves and a parka to keep you warm. And the most appealing part is that everyone has to leave their phone at the door because the heat could melt the ice. Really. Sounds like a great place to chill... POD 39
Aug. 1st-Aug. 31st
145 E. 39th St.
The Pod 39 Hotel's lovely rooftop bar might sit precariously on the edge of fratastic Murray Hill, but don't let that stop you from stopping in for a summer drink or two. The bar, which opened in 2012, offers a glittering view of the Empire State Building and Lower Manhattan, framed by the hotel's brick facade, twinkling lights and funky archways. Drinks average about $12 here—a steal, by rooftop bar standards— and you can score guacamole and chips from the hotel's in-house eatery, Salvation Taco. The Museum at Eldridge Street
Aug. 1st-Aug. 31st
12 Eldridge St.
In celebration of the 125th anniversary of the opening of the Eldridge Street Synagogue, a new web exhibit featuring the collections of the Museum is on display. The collections are organized in three groups, each relating to a tour offered at the museum. The synagogue opened in 1887 and served the neighborhood’s Jewish immigrant population for decades before it fell into decline in the early 20th century. Preservation and restoration work began in the late '80s and was completed in 2007. Today, the synagogue is a national historic landmark. Tasting the Immigrant Experience
Aug. 27th at 3:00 P.M.
Meets at the corner of Prince and Mulberry Sts.
This walk starts in Little Italy, then moves south, to Chinatown, where you'll pass dusty kitchenware shops stacked to the ceiling with crank pasta machines, rolling pins, and other culinary exotica, dry goods stores, and restaurants, where you will likely be accosted by waiters promising the best pranzo, (lunch) a custom imported from the streets of Naples and Palermo. If Little Italy feels frozen in time, Chinatown is perhaps New York's most vibrant, evolving neighborhood. Founded in the 1870s, Chinatown remained a relatively small enclave until 1943, when the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 was repealed. Restaurants have always been critical to the Chinatown economy: few tenements had kitchens, making cheap cook shops essential. Chinatown's markets are the city's most intriguing, with ingredients ranging from dried herbs and roots used medicinally, every variety of rice and noodle imaginable, to exotic fruits and vegetables. You will conclude the walk in front of the oldest extant dim sum parlor, dating to the 1920s.
