 Intelligent Infrastructure: Designing Smart Buildings for NYC

With New York City's building stock eating up $15 billion in yearly energy
costs and accounting for 75 percent of the City's total greenhouse gas
emissions, a sweeping effort is underway to make NYC's buildings more
efficient. Advances in information technology, architectural design, and
energy management are converging to create smart buildings that allow for
greater efficiency, control and comfort. But what combination of technology
and design makes a building "smart"?

For our next event, we call on two beacons of the industry to hear their
views on the future of analytics in the building space. Ariella Maron, the
Deputy Commissioner for Energy of New York City, has helped revamp NYC's
commitment to sustainability as a key figure in the development and
implementation of PlaNYC. Constantine Kontacosta paved the way for
interdisciplinary research of applied research and technology in the real
estate and construction industries as the founding director of the NYU
Schack Institute's Center for the Built Environment.

Join us on June 6th as we host a special one-on-one conversation between
these heavyweights as they discuss the technology, design and investments
in smart buildings that are reshaping the cleantech landscape in NYC.

Ariella Rosenberg Maron is the Deputy Commissioner for Energy Management at
the NYC Department of Citywide Administrative Services. Prior to this role,
she was the Deputy Director of the NYC Mayor's Office of Long-Term Planning
and Sustainability, the office responsible for the implementation of
PlaNYC, the city's long-term sustainability plan. She was part of the core
team that developed PlaNYC, focusing on air and water quality, energy, and
climate change. Ariella currently teaches a course on sustainability
indicators at the Pratt Institute. She received her Master in City Planning
from MIT where she concentrated on environmental policy and urban design
and focused her thesis research on mainstreaming green building in NYC.

Dr. Constantine Kontokosta, PE, is the Founding Director of the NYU Center
for the Sustainable Built Environment and is a Clinical Associate Professor
at the NYU Schack Institute of Real Estate. As of July 1st, he will be the
Deputy Director of the newly-created Center for Urban Science and Progress
(CUSP). He serves on the Americas Board of the Royal Institution of
Chartered Surveyors, the Board of the United Nations Environment Programme
Sustainable Buildings and Climate Initiative, and is a founding member of
leadership team of the Urban Systems Collaborative. Constantine holds a PhD
in Urban Planning, specializing in urban economics, from Columbia
University, a M.Phil and M.S. from Columbia, a M.S. in Real Estate Finance
from New York University, and a B.S.E. in Civil Engineering Systems from
the University of Pennsylvania.
