At the same time, Jean also falls under the spell of the free-spirited Andrée. Anton Bruckner; Symphony No. 3 in D Minor, "Wagner" (1873, plus many revisions). In 1873, in hopes of finding a champion, the timid but determined Anton Bruckner showed up on the Bayreuth doorstep of his idol, composer Richard Wagner, and asked whether he might dedicate a symphony to him, and offering a choice between his Second and the as-yet-unfinished Third symphonies. Not known for his humility, Wagner selected the Third, which included quotations from his operas, Die Walküre and Tristan und Isolde, and which Bruckner therefore dubbed "Wagner Symphony." The Third Symphony exists in no fewer than nine versions, because Bruckner was all too ready to accept the tinkering of others who thought they could improve on the composer's works. The epic sweep and rich brass sonorities unfolding in all their majesty - hallmarks of Bruckner's unique sound - make the Third Symphony an exhilarating sonic experience. In I'm a Stranger Here Myself, award-winning entertainer Mark Nadler "explores the depths of the European expatriate experience. Using songs by German and French artists - Kurt Weill, Friedrich Hollaender, Lotte Lenya and Marlene Dietrich (to name a few) - who through their music express the declarations of identity, the resistance in the face of terror and the hopes for survival. Nadler examines the lives of these artists as well as those of ordinary German citizens caught up in one of the most intriguing periods of the Twentieth Century. Nadler's multilingual performances of songs that speak of yearning for deliverance are especially pungent in their evocation of European Jews and homosexuals, the luckiest of whom found refuge in America." Mathematics illuminates the patterns and structures all around us. MoMath (as it calls itself) is not what you might expect. The Museum's dynamic exhibits and programs will stimulate inquiry, spark curiosity, and reveal the wonders of mathematics. MoMath is geared towards kids in grades 4 through 8, but there is plenty to engage younger kids and adults. In many ways the sensations of the displays are more compelling than the explanations of their content. Their goal is to show that math is fun, engaging, exciting. This tour takes you through New York's legendary slum, and the story of the Irish, Africans, Germans, Jews, Italians and Chinese who faced unbelievable obstacles to gain a foothold in America during its infancy. Buried deep beneath today's Chinatown lies New York City's legendary Five Points -- one-time godforsaken heart of the immigrant, impoverished and working-poor ghetto. A hallowed ground where days-long battles were fought over turf, culture, class and religion during one of the most corrupt and tumultuous eras in the history of this city.
