[Fredslist] Police Stop

This morning on the way to Long Beach (L I) I noticed State Police gathering on an approach road. We drove through and wondered the reason for all the patrol cars. 
Returning from the game we learned the purpose. The police were stopping each approaching car. The cars behind them stretched far away. 

Does anyone know the reason for such a mass stoppage on a beautiful Sunday morning?
