[Fredslist] College Scholarship Money

It was recently asked how to find "secret" scholarship money for college.
Obviously the best way to ensure scholarship money at colleges is to do
well academically in high school and on standardized testing. You should
also look into the competitiveness of the schools your child is applying to
so that you have a realistic expectation of where your student falls in the
applicant pool of that school. The higher your student falls in the pool
the better chance they will meet the qualifications for scholarship money.
Keep in mind that many schools are struggling with increasing amounts of
need while their budgets are still very tight. Make sure you know which
schools your child is applying to that cover full need (as determined by
financial aid forms like FAFSA) and which schools do not.

With reference to "secret" or unknown scholarship money, most of these
scholarships are from local organizations or donors and require a bit of
research. High school guidance counselors are the best people to check with
about these because they usually keep track of scholarships and can tell
you which ones the student might be eligible for. You can also check with
universities to see if there is a list of scholarships that can be
separately applied for. These will probably have specific eligibility
criteria like major, GPA, where the student is from, community service etc.

Thank you,
