So on this brisk day, as I traveled to Guetanos of Stratford CT to pick up three 6ft heros with a minivan full of beer, soda and water that would make a state trooper feel uncomfortable if I was pulled over, I thought of the triumph of Rudy Ruettiger.
"Rudy" was a great movie. For those who have not seen it look it up - it's a keeper. It is an account of the life of Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger, who harbored dreams of playing football at the University of Notre Dame despite significant obstacles. It was the first movie that the Notre Dame administration allowed to be shot on campus since Knute Rockne - All American in 1940.
See Rudy, was very much like the CT Hinterlanders. He dreamed of playing for one of the biggest football powerhouse (The Fighting Irish) but did not have the grades, the money, the physical stature or the talent to play there. Rudy takes a job at the local steel mill where his father works and when his friend is tragically killed he decides to go for broke and try to get to Notre Dame. The Hinterlanders were a "pick up" team of softball players going into battle against a softball powerhouse in the Batmen (at least that is what I can tell from all of the Fredslist postings about their wins).
To make a long story short, due to his academic and athletic short comings Rudy could not get admitted to Notre Dame. Instead, he went to Holy Cross, a junior college close by. He took a job with the field crew at Notre Dame while doing the best he could with his grades at Notre Dame. Rudy gets hammered by his older brothers and even his father for even thinking he could go to Notre Dame, let alone playing football there. When finally admitted to Notre Dame due to his continued efforts to get good grades, he exhibits more drive than some of his scholarship teammates.
Rudy never dressed for one game. In the last game, despite the coach's reluctance, his teammates convince him to let Rudy suit up.
After many chants for "Rudy", the coach finally lets Rudy enter the field with the defensive team on the final kickoff. He stays in for the final play of the game, sacks the Georgia Tech quarterback, and is carried off on the shoulders of his teammates.
Why did I go through all of this you say. Well, Fred is like Rudy's father. Proud of his son, but razzing the hell out of him when he even dares think he can play with the "Big Boys" at Notre Dame. He loves the fact that CT has not won in two years but loves the CT competition. Scott Bloom is like Rudy's older brother who talks so much "smack", is good at what he does and dares Rudy to try and one up him. The Hinterlanders performance today at the second annual Gotham Softball game has shown we have made it to Holy Cross and are starting to get good grades!
Unfortunately led by the "father figure" Fred Klein and "the older brother" Scott Bloom who went 4 for 4 with 2 homers and Jamie Rogavin who was also 4 for 4 the partially created "Batmen" beat the CT Hinterlanders by the score of 15-9. The Batmen were formidable and as expected played like the polished softball team we see in NYC.
The Batmen jumped off to a good lead, however, the Hinterlanders did compile a 5 run inning to keep it close. The umpire himself almost got tossed from the game after a questionable call at third base - I liked it - others apparently did not. However, in the grand scheme of things he did a great job!
Many cheered and rooted on both teams.
The Hinterlanders gave the Batmen a good fight and I believe in some innings they were concerned. We definitely kept it closer than last year. We have and will continue to have a significant amount of drive. Unfortunately, like Rudy, we will have to wait another year to transfer into the big leagues but the CT team will soon sack those frustrating Batmen and soon be carried off the field in triumph just as the foremost underdog, Rudy Ruettiger.
I have to recognize Lucas Meyer who found this great field in Scarsdale and secured it for us. I also want to thank Fred and Gotham for sponsoring the food and drink that was provided.
After the game, after yelling, some occasional trash talking we all came together for some good food, drink, and laughs - very much like my Sundays with my Italian relatives!
Anyway - despite the outcome (I'm biased) it was a great time!
