When the Gotham Traveling Willburys foray, or race (there was a challenge out there to another Gothamite beat our wheelman --Mitch Tobol to the newbies -- on time of arrival) to the Philly group got re-scheduled, I found myself with a free night and absolutely no FREE concert option (not even sure if a paying concert of interest was out there either.) (For newbies or anyone not paying attention, Fred Klein and Cindy Somma are the other Willburys.)

Then, last week, my friend and former co-worker in the office of the Bronx Borough President, Arnie Segarra, emailed me an invite to a special performance of the one-woman play, "Eva the Chaste" --produced by the theatre group, he chairs, Fallen Angel Theatre. It was 6:00 p.m. Monday, July 18. I did not expect anything that a nice early night out for Shelly and I. She is off for the summer and likes to visit the City. I thought I just might also catch up with Arnie (who actually goes back to the Lindsay administration and also worked for former Mayor Dinkins) and other folks I had not seen in a bit other than via Facebook or LinkedIn. More on that later.

First, Eva the Chaste, written by Barbara Hammond. If you have the time, give it a chance. It runs through Sunday at the Clurman Theater on Theater Row. Tickets cost cost $41.25 and are available from Theatre Row, 410 W 42nd St, NYC 212 239-6200 www.theatrerow.org or www.telecharge.com. It features a wonderful performance by Aedin Moloney. As stated in the promotional release, "The script, set in Dublin and Paris, explores the profound and unpredictable bond between a mother and a daughter; the grasp for life at the approach of death; and the road to hell — shining, smooth and paved with good intentions." Fallen Angel Theatre Company is a non-profit company based in New York committed to presenting the most outstanding & dynamic new British and Irish plays written by and about women.

Before and after the performance, held at a special reception room on the 35th Floor of Mutual of America Life Insurance Company at 320 Park Avenue, some 150 people caught up, networked and enjoyed h'or d'oeuvres, cold and hot buffet, cocktails and dessert. I also learned from MOA Chair, president and CEO, Tom Moran, that many of the Northern Ireland peace sessions were held in that very room.

Arnie who no offense to our tribal leader (Fred, Arnie has been doing it for five decades almost), excels at introducing the right strangers, introduced me to Mr. Moran and the evening's honoree, Yolanda Sanchez, Founder of the Puerto Rican Association for Community Affairs. I also caught up with former NYC Board of Education member Dr. Luis O. Reyes with whom I had worked during two mayoral campaign and who indirectly influence some of my son's graduate research, and former NYC Correction Commissioner and State Senator Catherine Abate who now leads a health care company. There was Michael Gaspard whose brother Patrick runs the President's re-election campaign (the last time I saw Michael I told him to get his brother to email me; after he left the White House Patrick and I finally reconnected and I shared that with Michael) and his boss, Scott Levenson whose political// lobbying firm, The Advance Group, has shared clients with me (Scott and I worked together in several races going back over 15 years). Perhaps the biggest surprise was seeing my former Bronx colleague, Javier Lopez, who has been a publicist for various government agencies and officials and now focuses on acting

If only I knew how nice the event it was going to be I could have made it a Willburys alternative outing, albeit with spouses.
