Development Director Job Description
Reports To: Executive Director
Employment Status: Full-time
Summary: Queens Theatre in the Park (QTP) is the premiere performing arts venue in Queens. QTP’s mission is to provide quality and diverse performing arts activities that are economically and geographically accessible to the 2.2 million residents of Queens, the most ethnically diverse county in the nation, and the surrounding metropolitan region.
The Development Director position is responsible for Queens Theatre in the Park’s (QTP) fundraising efforts as a nonprofit performing arts venue. The Development Director will provide leadership, strategic initiative and management of all fund-raising efforts. This position creates and coordinates programs to increase the organization's support base among individuals, corporations, charitable foundations, board of directors and additional sources.The Development Director will oversee the grant writing process and respective grant writers. The Development Director reports directly to and works closely with the Executive Director, and communicates regularly with the Managing Director.
Primary Responsibilities:
Development Program: Plans, directs and implements a comprehensive development program that generates individual donors, foundation and corporate support.
Directs a fund development program that includes the annual fund, foundation and corporate gifts, special events and capital campaign.
Manages endowment and capital campaign
Oversees and implements strategies that will grow annual revenue, writes proposals and secures funding from corporate and foundation donors
Oversee preparation and production of all promotional mailings, printed pieces, and web communications, as related to fund-raising.
Prepares annual development plan to corresponding budget outlining revenue and expenses; monitors progress against goals and produces monthly reports
Produces proposals, sponsorship invitations, and requests-for-grants for procuring funds for organizational efforts and causes.
Leads strategies and research to identify, prioritize, cultivate, solicit, recognize and steward all donors and prospects
Maintains an accurate grants calendar and transmits this information monthly to the Executive Director
Manages individual donor campaigns, including annual fund renewals and special appeals
Assists Executive and Managing Director in working with board of directors to enhance development efforts
Prepares letters, grant proposals and other reports or materials needed for effective cultivation and solicitation of prospects
Provides organizational information and support to all inquiries; provides information on QTP’s programming; develops materials and approaches to facilitate work; and follow up with inquiries as needed
Serves as a representative of the organization before public audiences, donors, and sponsors.
Communications: Works with staff, consultants, and directors to ensure strong communication across all program areas to strengthen QTP’s overall effectiveness. Represents QTP at public events, conferences, workshops and media events.
Management: Performs general management responsibilities, including annual plans, budgets, reports, and evaluation and oversight of gift tracking systems. Oversees part-time development assistants and external Consultants.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree required
Minimum three years experience in charitable fund development
Demonstrated success in securing major and annual gifts from foundations and corporations
Demonstrated success in meeting annual fund goals, development management, grant writing, sponsorships and special events
Excellent written/oral communication skills
Computer literacy and competency with electronic donor tracking systems, particularly Raisers Edge
Demonstrated success in successfully soliciting and securing major gifts from individuals
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Strong knowledge of principles, ethics and practices of successful fundraising
Ability to lead multiple long- and short-term projects simultaneously, meeting all related deadlines; ability to plan, prioritize, coordinate, and manage own work; ability to work unsupervised and make decisions and solve problems independently, effectively and creatively
Excellent verbal communication, interpersonal and relationship-building skills to effectively work with a variety of people and personalities; ability to communicate clearly in person and in writing
Ability to manage and share pertinent information with staff and board.
Proven ability to work effectively with board members, colleagues and donors
Ability to present, inform and motivate individuals and groups about QTP’s mission and philanthropy
Goal-oriented, persistent and persuasive in the contact, follow-through and completion of acquiring donor gifts
