As the campaign for Gotham's Summer of Giving draws close, I am reminded
of the thrill of winning half of your generous donations for my charity the
Friends of PS 169. With your help we sent 49 severely emotionally
disturbed and learning disabled and autistic children who attend PS 169 to summer
camp for three weeks each.
With the help of Geraldine Newman, Raj Goel and Marc Halpert, we started a
web site called _www.thefriendsofps169.com_
(http://www.thefriendsofps169.com) . We would welcome any donation you might want to make to our cause.
It costs us $2400 per child per three week session....so little drops in
the bucket or a major hurricane really helps us achieve our goal of exceeding
last years number of kids going.
The women who is in charge of the camp program, Ellen Lieberman, has
gathered some wonderful letters and stories of some of the children who attended
camp last summer. I thought you might like to read a couple of them.
A 14 year old boy, G------, went to camp for 5 summers. His mother is in
jail and he lives with his Grandmother. He told me that he doesn't want to
do drugs the way his Mother did and says he tries to be like his counselors
in camp. In his last 2 summers at camp, he became a "teen leader" to the
younger children. This job is only given to those campers that show
leadership skill and enjoy working with younger children. This has been an extremely
successful program at camp, as many troubled children enjoy helping
younger ones. Gustavo is definitely one of our "poster" children: he has gone on
to the High School for Aeronautics and seems to be on a successful path.
A Bran--- was one of our homeless students who were living in shelters
during the camp season. Our organization usually has enough funds to send
students to just 1 of the 3 available 3 week sessions. When our group visited
camp that season, Brandon ran over to us and literally begged to go to the
next session. It didn't take long for us to decide that yes, it would surely
be better for him to stay at camp for another 3 weeks, instead of
returning to the shelter. His mother was so grateful for this extra session as she
was able to find housing with family by the time he came home.
These children benefit more than I can tell you by their experiences. So
when that envelope comes around at your Group meeting....be generous.
Whomever wins this year will really appreciate it. Every cent goes to a good
cause. Thank you for last year...
