Subject: About my sister, Rita
I will be going back to Albuquerque next week. We are not sitting shiva.
There will be a memorial service next weekend. If you want to send it out,
I would like it as I'd like people to know the person I lost....A better
version is below...
Thanks with love,
Bambe
About my sister, Rita Levine Lovato
My sister lived in Albuquerque, NM and after she married Martine Lovato, a
well known American Indian Jewelry maker from the Santo Domingo Pueblo
tribe, she was adopted by this tribe as one of there's. My sister was one
of the country's leading American Indians Jewelry dealers mostly from the
Santo Domingo Pueblo tribe. She brought commerce and work to these people
and helped to keep their fast dying arts and crafts alive. Rita was a
Fulbright award winner in pottery -- the first woman to study ceramics as a
Fulbright in Japan (1962-64). At one time, before she discovered the arts
and crafts of the Native American people, she was one of LA's leading avante
guarde artists.
Rita Levine Lovato is the founder of the Museum of Southwest Native American
Jewelry. As a historian, writer and collector of American Indian jewelry
she played a large role in the recent New York Museum of Natural History
Show, Totems and Turquoise where many pieces from her collection where
exhibited. Her husband also has six pieces in the show which is now in LA.
A college scholarship fund in her name has been set up to help young Santo
Domingo Pueblo students.
My sister Rita traveled far from her Great Neck, Long Island roots.
