Dear Gothamites,
A client sent me a strange wish list: Food-co-op-type items needed by the
East New York Farms! food co-op because a storage container was
inadvertently destroyed by the Department of Sanitation.
It could've happened to any of us.
Information follows, including who to call if you can help. If you can,
please do.
Note that they're giving free advertising in their community newspaper to
anyone who contributes, and the contributions are tax-deductible.
Thanks.

Dear Store Manager,
I am writing on behalf of East New York Farms! to request a donation,
because of a recent emergency that has the potential to devastate the East
New York Farmers Market.
East New York Farms! brings together urban gardeners, local youth,
entrepreneurs, and regional farmers to create a public market that provides
locally-grown healthy food to our underserved community. Youth between the
ages of 13 and 17 are hired to work in on our ½ acre urban farm, learn about
sustainable and organic growing methods, and then help to sell produce at
the farmers market. They also assist community gardens throughout East New
York, helping neighborhood gardeners produce more vegetables. This
program's innovative approach to urban agriculture has been featured in the
New York Times and Gourmet magazine.
The farmers market serves over 11,800 customers annually, and accepts
Farmers Market Nutrition Program Coupons (for low-income seniors, mothers,
and children) and Food Stamps to ensure that all residents - regardless of
income - have access to healthy food. The market also hosts a farm share
program that has a sliding scale for members.
In the past week we have discovered that our storage container holding
$10,000 worth of equipment has gone missing from the market site, and was
subsequently destroyed by the Department of Sanitation. The contents of the
container included tables, chairs, tents, scales, baskets, trash cans, and
dry-erase boards. This equipment is used by the local vendors at the
market, and its loss has serious consequences for the market's operations
this year.
We are seeking donations of equipment or funds to cover this loss, and have
attached a wish-list of needed supplies. All contributions to United
Community Centers, ENY Farms!' sponsoring organization, are tax deductible.
Businesses and individuals donating equipment will be honored in our
literature, and receive free advertisements in our community newspaper, The
Link (distributed to 10,000 household on a bi-monthly basis).
We look forward to receiving your help. Please call Sarita or Jonah at
718-649-7979 with any questions.
Sincerely,
Sarita Daftary Jonah Braverman
