Coming Attractions

Categories
Movies

We have started going back to the movies, but following our last, most recent, visit I'm not quite sure...

We arrived in time for the scheduled start of our chosen flick, unaware that the next 15 minutes are devoted to Coming Attractions and other less biting commercials.

I say "less biting" because the Coming Attractions took a shocking bite out of us and made us feel old (as in old fashioned) to boot.
To say that the Coming Attractions we were subjected to were salty is an understatement.

To call it what it is, they were low brow and profanity laced. Never before have I heard the F Word used so often and in so many uncreative incarnations.

Once again, as Dylan prophesied, The Times They Are A-Changin'!

And, obviously (and thankfully), I'm not keeping up :(

I used to love coming attractions— my movie partner and I used to always gave a thumbs up or down. Having said that - it depends on the feature. We tended to go a lot of foreign or art house movies. Today I’m hard pressed to find a movie I want to see. And going to the movies used to be my favorite thing in life.

Times are changing. It's not just movies but the opposite can be said on what is shown on broadcast media. Everyone is afraid to write something they feel. Watch any sitcom from twenty years or more ago. They had clever and pointed opinions and freedom to express that. Today it's all about feeling good and dancing the line between being accepted. Maybe the language pushed in your face in movies is a result of this time we are in currently and how society shows it. For whatever reason, it usually leads to what sells for that demographic.
Shelley Simpson

The only time I go to the movies is with the grandkids because they still enjoy it. I stopped going years ago because it is too loud. Although the high volume of the film almost drowns out the sound of people eating their cheesy nachos. I much prefer watching at home.
Fred Klein

Saw Mission Impossible yesterday and it was thumbs down
Paul Napolitano

Go see Sound of Freedom. Riveting and important!

I agree on the commercials. Totally not for our demographic.
Flo Feinberg

Come to the Cinema in Huntington!..so civilized and we ARE the demographic there:) You will feel just fine.
Vincent Russo

I took my grandchildren to see Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and was subjected to the same experience as Fred.
i was not happy and yes, the times are a changin - but we all have a say in it.

I seem to be the odd one out here. Of course, the trailers shown for Mission Impossible are not going to be your demographic. We went to see The Quiet Girl at Angelika, adored the film, highly recommend, loved having a communal experience with others. Don’t get to the movie theater often and cherish it when I do. Yes, as ever, things are always changing and thank God.
Flo Feinberg

I think the Cinema Arts Center in Huntington shares the same movie focus as The Angelika; no better way to enjoy a communal experience
… just add popcorn:)

With the actors strike on top of the writers strike you may not have to worry so much for a while! Another sad sign of change.
Rick Raymond

Times are a'changing. May I have the grace to accept what I can not change, and the courage to change what I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.
ODEY RAVIV

Being on time is not the optimal way to go to the movies if you hate trailers for the language or for ruining the plot of the coming attraction. 20 mins after showtime is perfect.
Surely, Lenny Bruce would not be shocking nowadays. And, how did you like Mission Impossible?
Kelly Welles

So sorry to hear this. Rarely go anymore.. Alas, now one must even select movies strategically. How counter-intuitive. Next options are a private home screening room. Or, Movies on Demand.
Cinema Paradiso is Gone with the Wind.
Paula Oleska

I share your complain about the coming attractions, Fred. I went to see Indiana Jones with a few friends, and it had 30 minutes of commercials! The movie was long enough but with those commercials/coming attractions it was three hours! If I'm going to a commercial theater, I'm coming at least 15/20 minutes late.
