Tipping

I recently had an interesting conversation with friends about tipping.

Before I relate the conversation , it is useful to explain that “tip” is an acronym for To Insure Promptitude and the custom originated in Europe and is traced back to 17th century England.

Whatever it’s origins, tipping has become an integral way of life and sustenance in our 21st century world.

When I was coming up my father taught me to tip 10%.  Then it became 15% and now 20% seems to be the norm.

Whatever the percentage, an interesting question is whether one tips on the after tax total or just basic bill?

Another nuance, realizing the server depends in large part on his or her tip compensation as part of their living wage, is that breakfast prices are lower than lunch and even more so when compared to dinner.  The thought that was mentioned and had never come to my mind is that, as a consequence, Breakfast tips should be more ample than at other meals.  Clearly, I will be mindful of that going forward!

Not to be forgotten is the practice of tipping in cash when paying by credit card, which nicely favors the server.

Then there is the other area of general tipping to reward or obtain special service.

This tipping/bribery can be at the hotel front desk, in a parking garage or at a Club.  I call it creative tipping which my father was great at. Needless to say, they remembered him the next time he showed up!

Did you see Anna Delvey in Inventing Anna snowing folks with $100 bills?  It was quite an eye opener and has influenced me to loosen up with my $20s as I leave my favorite restaurants :)

PS I tip 30% at my hard to get into, favorite restaurant  :)

At a restaurant I standardly tip 20% unless there was exceptional service then I tip more. That’s clear. Less clear however is how much to tip your doormen, garage attendants, hair dresser etc,

Excellent post, Bravo Fred! my Father is also a master of tipping/greasing the skids. When an issue comes up he will ask, "Did you show your gratitude?" When I visit my parents on weekends, we often get takeout for lunch and more often then not will be extra food and dessert thrown in because he "shows them his gratitude."

Tipping is something I enjoy giving even - I also enjoyed getting them when I was on the other side of the equation. I see it as a "grat" more than a "tip." It is an expression of gratitude for being taken care of and for being able to offer something back. I have not seen "Inventing Ann" yet.

20% is the new norm.....
And we’ll give a few dollars to the bus boy at our favorite places.

Bus boy is an interesting nuance :)

Tipping is definitely to be considered as part of the experience when going out. Not sure I like the electronic pad thrown in front of you with a suggested tip amount in large numbers, but I guess it ensures more people give something. There is a custom button if you so desire to go that way for exceptional service (or not).

Loved, the series Inventing Anna! Tipping is an art form. I try to take special care of the people that I’m in contact with frequently like my dry cleaner, barber, car wash guys, super market cashier, dealership service tech, bakery, butcher shop, even my CPA; it goes a long way. When you’re in need of a special requests they are always there to help.

To them you are surely Reliable Ray :)

Interesting history on tipping.
Restaurants straightforward to a degree but what about plumbers or electricians who work for a “big boss” or company? Ray’s thought makes sense, better service next time.

Depending on the interaction and quality of service.

I think baseline for me is 20% unless the service has been truly exceptional - then anywhere from 25 to 35. I remember when I was a camp counselor during the summers when I was in college, the tips were everything. More than my salary! Parents would give us envelopes with cash in them. I still remember being devastated when someone stole all of my tips from my locker one summer! I felt like I had worked all summer for nothing!

I usually tip generously-not Anna Delvey rates though-and in cash. The new question has become do you tip Uber drivers? My kids say no, it's included. But I usually add a tip.

Someone just told me they don’t tip on liquor
Julie Klein

I enjoy tipping too. It makes me feel good to help people when I can and especially for good service.

I am a generous tipper because they are performing a service that I don't want to do myself--so why not!
