It’s something we do about 25,000 times a day without even thinking. It keeps us alive, but it can also be one of the most powerful tools we have for reducing stress, sharpening focus, and improving overall well-being.

The surprising truth? Most of us aren’t breathing the right way, and it’s quietly taking a toll. Shallow, unconscious breathing can keep our bodies in a subtle state of stress. But when we breathe deeply and mindfully, we trigger the body’s natural relaxation response, lowering tension and creating a sense of calm. Practiced regularly, deep breathing can transform your mental and physical health.

That’s why I make it a point to teach deep breathing techniques to every cohort I work with at Hofstra. Because breath isn’t just about survival, it’s the bridge between your mind, body, and spirit.
