A True Icon

I was very saddened to hear this week that Valerie Harper, the actress who played Rhoda Morgenstern on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and, thereafter, on the spin-off, “Rhoda” has terminal cancer.

As a young girl, I loved watching “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” with my friends. While my friends all seemed to identify with Mary, it was the character of Rhoda that truly resonated with me.

Unlike Mary, Rhoda was not physically “perfect.” She did not have naturally straight hair nor was she genuinely thin. Instead, she openly struggled with her weight as well as her naturally curly hair. Though she struggled with her physical characteristics, Rhoda proved to many young female viewers that we could rely on our intelligence and wit in order to succeed. In the early 1970’s that was a message that was not readily conveyed to young women. It was, however, a message that needed to be heard.

Ever since I have heard the sad news, I have kept Ms. Harper in my thoughts and prayers. I admire the bravery she has shown since announcing her sad news. And I thank her for the role model she continues to be.

Really nice blog Rona. I saw her recently on a talk show and I don't know that she knew about this yet. Either way I thought then how remarkably down to earth, warm and bright she was. I am not picking on you, because I have this same battle with my wife on a daily basis, but I wonder how this blog relates to last week's blog with regards to women and television :)

She was always likable and I recall watching her show. Never really identified with MTM's lead character.

I was equally upset when I heard the actress Bonnie Franklin recently passed away (one day at a time). It's one of those reminders that we're not getting any younger.

It certainly is a reminder of our mortality - We need to live life to the fullest!

It is a terrible disease and it is very sad to hear about anyone having it. TV icons become part of our lives and our histories. I agree with Riva, it's a reminder to live every day to the fullest.

She had great nterview on the doctors. SO life affirming, gracious, grateful. My daughter, Ariel Fixler, watched her and found it most inspriing. Alll the more so now because she has been diagnosed with another cancer and possible organ failure that would require transplant. We stay present andhold hope close.

Valarie also said that her fans said Mary was the have-it-all perfect they aspired to be.Rhoda was who they really were, all the good stuff, the messy stuff, struggles and all
