The Sweeter the Better

Over the years, I have heard more than a snicker or two as I ordered a glass of wine. I am not shy about my order. I ask for my sweet white wine loudly and clearly. Seriously, at Passover I look forward to the Heavy Malaga Concord Grape Manischewitz. That should give you an idea about how sweet is sweet in my world.

For a long time, I ordered a cold glass of White Zinfandel. Then I discovered sweet Riesling and at some point a year or two ago, graduated to Moscato. But recently, I turned up the sweetness quotient even further.

After a partnership meeting recently, my partners decided to go out for a drink together. I hung back to make a call but asked them to do what I would – ask the waiter for the sweetest glass of wine on the menu. For the first time, I tasted something called Ice Wine. Move over Moscato! Of course, I learned quickly that I had moved from perhaps the least expensive to the most expensive wine but so be it.

Anyone want to join me for a glass of Ice Wine? What is your favorite?

I'm a big fan of Long Island wines and Paumanok Vineyards. They produce a Late Harvest Riesling that is as sweet as honey. It is pricey but it's like sipping liquid GOLD.

Ok. That's a challenge. Me, you, Victoria and Bill are getting together over the holidays and I will bring some seriously sweet and delicious wines. Eiswein, Port, late harvest Rieslings, and some really crazy stuff!

If you like Ice Wine, you need to try Duck Walk vineyard's. It is awesome. They also have two dessert wines, Blueberry port and a Blackberry that are fantastic served with dark chocolate morsels. They can also be served alone or over Vanilla ice cream. so if you like it sweet, that is the way to go.

I just tried a new winemaker Out East here, that has a wine called Anomaly. It is not too sweet but tastes like peaches. Fantastic.

I have many bottles of Manechevitz left over from 10 Passovers ago. You are more than welcome to take them.

Nance, go crazy, and have Paul bring some Sauternes -- preferably Chateau d'Yquem....
Rona Gura

Paul, I started the Riesling voyage with Nancy. In fact, if I remember correctly, Nancy, I offered you your first taste of Riesling. I think that earns Phil (who will happily not drink and be our designated driver) and I a place at Paul's table. :)

Abeshouse knows what he's talking about! Chateau d'Yquem is the best of the best! Gia, does Pindar still make Aphrodite? That's the best wine (sweet or not) that I have ever had from Long Island. Rona, that sounds like a plan! A sweet wine, dessert only, sugar shock wine tasting! Not sure how this will impact my low carb diet! ;)

Ok Paul, I am up for the challenge!! Tell us when! You have all made me want to go home and open a bottle of wine -- just sayin!!
Nancy Schess

And David, I learned from you that my newly discovered Ice Wine appreciation was actually outside the snicker category. Probably first time in my life. Rona, you would love it.

I've never tried Ice Wine. We'll have to make a date to go have some.

Liz, you're on! And my treat to celebrate your newly crowned status as networker of the year!

Great plan all - Looking forward!!! What a "sweet" way to celebrate the holidays and New Year! (Ok, ok groan. . . .)
Seriously though, I usually prefer drier wines, but some of the Rieslings are awesome - especially those with nice, tart citrus streak - yummmm!! And the Yquem is unreal! We can pair with a nice French apple tart and really blow the low carb diet! Yay!

I have no issues with drinking sweet wine, but all else being equal, give me a great 25-year-old Chateauneuf du Pape or a well-aged Argentine Malbec.
Corey Bearak

try a
nice Sauterne or Schloss Johannisberger Riesling Rosalack Auslese; we called it the honey wine.
Kosher Bartenura Asti is also delightfully and sparkling Sweet.
