It's Getting Close -- The Must Haves and Must Nots

My house is all consumed right now with college prep. Not the figuring out what school to go to kind – but the shopping, packing and generally getting ready to leave kind.

I will save until later in the month the blog about sending my oldest off to college. I am trying hard not to think too much about that day – it’s not going to be pretty! (I am sure that I will be a wreck. Of course, if anyone has any advice for me, I am all ears.) Instead, today’s blog is about the feeling that we are buying too much. This past weekend was the must have shoes and the drug store run after which I commented that it seemed that she would not need to see the inside of Walgreens all year.

So, for those of you who have been through this before, do you have any words of wisdom for me? What are those items we absolutely must have – and really, what are the ones on which we should not waste our time or money?

It all really depends on where one dorms; but the basics to stock that place. I also know that Bed, agh & Beyond allows you to buy here and pick up at a store near the college. I also found Marisa did not end up using a lot of the supplies she lifted from my office, from hanging folder and manilla folders to various markers. Most docs resided on her Mac. She also found it more practical to print at the library than use her own ink. So the interesting thing involves getting a fridge and/ or t.v.

I agree with Corey's BB&B suggestion, and the TV. Fridges often are rented via the school per semester. Probably best to have Jackee chat with some of the Young Pros, my kids included, to find out their recommendations.

Also, there are companies that offer insurance policies for students' personal property while at school -- IIRC, the cost was about $125/year for ~$5K coverage.

She might not use most of it, but it will make YOU feel better for her to have it!

The problem with the BB&B suggestion is that is often extremely crowded and difficult to get your stuff. I prefer to bring it all with us.

The best tip, is to stock up on the vacuum cleaner storage bags at BJs or Costco. They're perfect for her linens (including pillows and comforter), towels and clothes and pack it all down to half the size. It was the only way we are were able to get two upstate last year at the same time.

Donna Levine wrote breath for starters. Shes not going to the end of the world shes only going to CT and they have everything there. Get her the bedding and the egg crate thing that goes on the mattress. Make her room as comfortable as possible and have her pack things that will be familiar to her so she feels safe.

Bed Risers--these are 4 inch blocks that you place under the bed that provides extra storage. You can purchase these at Bed Bath & Beyond. My husband ordered our daughters fridge and microwave attachment...we sold it after graduation-- made back our investment! Better than the rentals. Bed Bath & Beyond also has KD 3 or 4 draw stands that can double as a night stand and provide storage for sundries, school supplies, socks, undies, etc. 1 set of plastic tableware, glass and plastic flatware. Storage bins for added clothing or supplies storage to be stored under bed. Please call me at 203-253-1462 as I have a few other suggestions... Enjoy this special time... it goes fast and before you know it, you'll be at graduation!
