Convenience

Summer, weather, heat,

I love summer - fresh air coming through open windows! I’ve always seen air conditioning as an unnecessary convenience – not good for the environment and not necessary for me.

When we lived in Florida, we were on the water and had the ocean breeze. I only turned on the a/c occasionally to dry things out and prevent mildew.

In my UWS apartment, installing an a/c unit required choosing between using the only available outlet for the a/c or for the internet – an easy choice. And besides, there are only a few weeks each summer that are really uncomfortable. The fans worked fine - I could deal with the noise and papers blowing off my desk - we managed to make it through without too much inconvenience.

Two weeks ago, on a very warm, rainy evening, the windows of our Riverdale apartment were open - the sweet smells of summer were coming in, but so was the rain.

Did I really want to be inconvenienced by having to put down towels to protect the window sills like I did in the past? Did I really want to be uncomfortable even for a short time? Did really I want to deal with the hassle than comes from using fans?

I walked over to the thermostat and turned on the air conditioner; I set the temperature to 74 degrees where it will, no doubt, stay.

So convenient!

AC down south is a requirement and something everyone uses for 10 months out of the year. We do live off the water. But the humidity is too high and mold growth too much of a concern not to use it. Funny thing is, our thermostat is kept at 78 year round and it still feels cool. In NY I always set the hotel to 69. Not sure why that is. My stepdaughter who visits several times a year couldn't belive how cool it felt at 78 inside our house. AC is not an option here.

For many years in NYC I had no air conditioning. I used to soak bamboo shades in the tub and hang them in the window with a fan on the other side. Heard they did that in India. Summer was dealt with using the following techniques: (1) working all day in air conditioned offices (2) staying up all night in clubs and after-hour underground joints and (3) sleeping through the hottest parts of mid-day on weekends. Now, I grow old ("I wear my trousers rolled") and leave the AC on all day and night.

When I visit my kids in GA the thermostat is set at 68-70 all year. The give me two comforters and I cover the air vents with pillows.
