Cuba Libre

Cuba Libre is my favorite 5:00 adult beverage while I am in Key West. For those unfamiliar, it is a mix of rum, coke and a squeeze of lime. To say the least it tickles my fancy. Especially when sipped from an old fruit jar :)

Allegedly, it was named at the dawn of the 20th Century by an American Captain stationed in Havana during the Spanish-American War who hoisted it while toasting "Por Cuba Libre" ("To a free Cuba") and just like that a catchy appellation was born!

My first experience with this sweet libation occurred when I tasted the drink of aspiring around the World, single sailor, Guy deBoer at New York Ranger, Stanley Cup winning, hockey coach Mike Keenan's Super Bowl party.

Since then I've been hooked and imbibe one every day at 5:00.

Try one. I guarantee you'll like it!

What kind of rum do you prefer? A light clear rum or a darker more sugarcane, molasses, raw rum?

I will need to try this. I just havent been a Rum fan since my early years as a drinker.

Without the coke it would suit me fine. Glad you will be home soon and back to wine. And for other reasons too.

Be careful! Don't let your bartender use Captain Morgan! A good solid Rum is better.
It is even better with Mexican Coke - which is made with sugar cane and doesn't have that chemical flavor.
I quit them when I realized it was more sugary than I could (or should) take.

Am glad you have your "key" beverage of choice! Rum kills my stomach for some reason. I do like other "brown" water and vodka. Looking forward to imbibing with you on the pizza crawl!

Cheers. But oh, I got so sick drinking rum while in college I never went back to it.
