When Personal Becomes Professional

Categories
Lifestyle

I was reminded recently of the personal experiences we sometimes bring to our professional experience.

As many of you know, I became a divorce lawyer after going through my own personal divorce. In making the change, I felt that my personal experiences going through my own divorce would enhance my work as a divorce attorney. I believed that my personal experiences could bring a different sense of empathy to my clients. Several of my divorce attorney colleagues are also divorced and believe the same.

Do you bring your personal experiences into your professional life?

I often bring my personal and professional experience to coaching sessions. Empathy, as Fred said, is indeed a super power. I find, though, that I need to remember to use my experiences as a potential frame for discussion without making any assumptions about the client's experience being similar to my own and without imposing my opinion rather than basing our discussions on theirs. Tightrope work worthy of Paula!

LOL, Susan! But what you say is right on. xo

I do bring my personal experiences in what I do. I think we all do to a degree. I know what it feels like to be a buyer often, so in my sales job, I get it.

Such a great question and I am pretty sure I do. You have heard me describe myself as a culture lawyer. I that the similar ideas guide me personally.
