Defining Moments
You know (because I probably talk about it way too much) that my daughter is an avid public speaking competitor. We were talking recently about the fact that her favorite speeches usually begin “The date was XXXXXXX” followed by a distinct description of the moment. That observation started us talking about the dates or moments that define each of us. I am still thinking about my own “defining moments”.
I know “September 1980” defines me – I went away to college and from home for the first time.
I know that “April 1981” defines me – I was talking about my then undecided aspirations with my neighbor Rita Bergman and she said “why don’t you go to law school?”
I know that “Christmas Eve 1990” defines me – standing on line for 2 hours waiting to get into a club (a Jewish Singles event if you must know) I talked to Bill and the rest is history.
I know that “Novemberish 1996” defines me – Fred walked into my office and said “We’re forming a networking group” to which I said “Great! What’s a networking group?”
Do you have a “defining moment”?

I can simply ask Fred or check my diary for the date we met at an Israeloff CLE (or might it be the earlier CLE Michael Garibaldi did for the former State Bank of LI which got me on the Israeloff list and let to me meeting Fred (and Gotham).
I would have to decide the defining moment in terms of getting the job with Freddy Ferrer. It could be the night of Greg Meeks special election victory in 1998 when we spoke of me working for him and he asked me to check back in the summer; it could be the early summer day in City Hall Park when I spoke to former Ruth Messinger chief of staff Pat Roach who became a special assistant to Freddy in '98 and I broached the topic of my winter Freddy chat and she called me later to apply; perhaps it later when I actually had the interview with Freddy always memorable because through I took mass transit to the Bx, we ended up driving down to the State committee offices so he could unveil a commercial hitting D'Amato (who is know is buddy) and the throng of reporters from city hall just presumed I was there as an operative not to interview. Or maybe it was the day I decided to move on from the council in early '98.
Certainly the August day I decided not to go Queens college to register for classes (Free tuition made it easy to delay making a decision) and settle on Hofstra where I had a scholarship.
Or the day I joined the Mario Cuomo campaign for Mayor in 1977.
One day I will put out calendars and attach dates.

Yes a (the?) defining moment. She's now 21, a senior in college and is making noises about law school.
