A capital idea

Imagine walking into a restaurant, bar or public place and no one is on their phone. Lot's of interaction...people talking smiling, arguing and sharing. It's unusual these days.

However, The Fat Boar, a pub in Wrexham, north Wales, is offering people 25 per cent off their food if they lock their phones away in a box on the table. They then have to hand the keys over to staff for the entire duration of their meal.

The owners had gotten so fed up of seeing their customers glued to their phones they came up with this breakthrough idea. They are only offering it for one day a week calling it Mobile Free Monday.

Restaurant manager Jade Darlington said "Mobile phones can often be a real distraction and stop us from just sitting among family and friends and simply having a good conversation and that’s why I came up with the idea."

Cheers Joe!

The Mobile Phone has become more than a media for Voice Communications. Last year I had the opportunity to interview HS Students, prior to Presenting in "Bring Your Grandparent to School" with my 16 year old Granddaughter. Many of this generation view "The Mobile Phone" as a True Extension of Their Body. They think of it as a Computer, Extension of Their Brain, an additional "Sense". I was truly enlightened by these students comments, one of which said; "How did you ever get by with out one, when you were a child"? I went on to say, "I was 40 years old before having my first Mobile Phone" It was made by Motorola, cost about $3,600.00 and was a "Flip-Phone". She almost lost it. While presenting to "The Junior Class" or about 100 students, I asked who did not own a Mobile Phone and no one raised a hand. Wow! I said to myself. I then asked my audience "What are you top-ten uses": Talking didn't even make the top-10..... That's when I knew we (The Baby Boomers), are experiencing a "Paradigm Shift" in How People Communicate". Talking Person-to-Person is on the Down-slide. Don't call me and leave a message, I know you called and I'll call you back if and when I get the opportunity to TALK. In the future, just text me and I'll respond immediately. Better yet, they Communicate with Foreign Exchange Students in their native language via an AP to which you speak in English - the AP states your words in Japanese, then waits for a response and in return translates and responds back to you (via your phone) in English. Two students actually demonstrated this to me. I can go on & on, but i think the younger generation got this one RIGHT... PS: That was last June and it still makes me think. In my opinion, This is the Future --- Lead, Follow or Get out of the Way....

Love this idea! We went out to dinner on Valentine's day and at every table around us, people were looking at their phones instead of their Valentines!

excellent marketing idea as Mondays (and sometimes Tuesdays) very slow days for most restaurants.

Just use it or not. The technology is a gift, if you can’t be present in the world, the phone will exacerbate that. The phone is not the villain, peoples fear is the “villain.” And whether other people are using their phones is none of my business. We live in paradise, surrounded by love, where ANYTHING is possible. Stop complaining and create your own world. These are the good old days.

Cayce, it is not about our world. I agree that we should be responsible for our own lives. How our children and grand children do and do not communicate is also our business,. Parents, educators and social scientists have pointed out the decline in our young people's ability to interact socially. This is not the "phone's fault." It is,however, due to the social media addition that now often defines our way of communicating. Any opportunity to connect directly can only be a good thing.
Daniel Schwartz

I for one live the idea. It is too easy to text. No one wants to talk face to face. Crazy.
Cayce Crown

I have created it, surrounded by love. I enjoy engaging daily with people face to face and I love the many uses of the smart phone.
Cayce Crown

Of course, Gideon, that’s my point. If you like to engage face to face
Like I do, then create your world to support that, but none of us know what is best for any other adult.
Rona Gura

Love it!!! Although so many young people, my children included, use the phone to take pictures of the food to post on Instagram, Yelp etc. I wonder if it affects their social marketing.
