Polls

Between now and November 8th, I am going to learn more about polls than I may ever want to know. Every day there's a new poll and every new poll is accompanied by an analysis of the techniques utilized by the poll. Then some commentator will delve into the bias of the poll. Gone are the simple days of "here are the results and there's a error factor of 3%".

I was called by a pollster a few months ago. It was to determine my preference in a five-way primary. Or so they said. After fifteen minutes of questions and follow-up questions, I excused myself and got off the call. The pollster actually called me back saying that unless I finished answering her questions, my answers wouldn't be counted. Frankly, I didn't care. I lost any faith in polling during that one encounter.

It seems that I may be the only one who has lost faith in polls. If no-one believed them, why would they be the source of such great apparent interest? And, remember, I've become a CNN junkie. So I'll read the polls and the analyses. And, on November 8th, we'll see how the polls made out.

The only poll that matters is taken in the voting booth.

NPR has a contest between a computer and 2 journalists regarding the outcome, more interesting than polls. I agree with Cayce, everyone voting is the best.

Polls remain useful snapshots. I always look at the cross tabs to help me weigh the accuracy. Certain polls make mistakes in their initial sampling (composition of the electorate) and those outcomes make the polls less accurate.

Don't believe in the polls. Look to the UK where betting parlors are legal or Vegas and Danny Sheridan types. People who "have skin in the game" may provide a better barometer ! http://nypost.com/2016/06/05/when-it-comes-to-donald-trump-trust-these-bookies-over-pundits/

Also...don't put too much faith in CNN. They're bias is transparent in their reporting. For more "fair and balanced" reporting you have to look at FOX. Charles Krautheimer and Newt Gingrich usually provide an interesting view.
