Rashomon

Categories
Politics

Rashomon was an iconic 1950 Japanese movie wherein a number of eye witnesses to a horrendous event each had a different version as to what happened.

The Rashomon effect is contradictory interpretations of the same event by different people.  It is said that the effect is not only based on differences in perspective, but occurs where such differences arise in combination with the absence of evidence to elevate or disqualify any version of the truth, plus social pressure for closure on the question.

The inspiration for this blog arises from our present raging presidential campaign-especially on our smoking Politics List Serve.

To borrow from another movie, it's like "China Town"!

The difference between Rashomon and want's going on now - is that the eye witness believed what they were reporting. This blow hard we dealing with today is a pathological liar - whose concern for and recognition of the truth is non existent. DON'T GET ME STARTED !!!

PERSPECTIVE. I know better than to engage politically these days especially on a post like this . But here I go anyway as Fred rolls his eyes . But right here on this blog today is a perfect example of Rashomon. Perspective . I assume Judy to be in Hillary's camp because of previous comments . Judy please correct me if I'm wrong . But yet although public opinion sways toward the fact that Hillary is the non - transparent candidate whose issues with trust and not telling the truth are WELL KNOWN it is Judy's PERSPECTIVE that it is Trump that is the pathological liar . Of course he lies as do ALL politicians at least most if not many ......... But PATHOLOGICAL ? Not so sure . Whereas ( and here I stray into no man's land ) Hillary ? Pathological liar ? You bet . And there we have it . Rashomon or perspective . 180 degrees to be exact . Judy your table at Rao's is ready . I hear the meatballs are to die for !

I think there is agreement that noone trusts any candidate's truthfulness sadly. The real question when we put aside the noise is who is competent to serve and are we going to decide that based upon what benefits us personally or for the greater good.

I like Ester's comment. The problem is that the noise is so loud. It's difficult to put it aside.

I agree with Judy and Ben. This guy stirs up ire at every chance he gets, and the thing about it is that many of his supporters know it and eat it up. Just yesterday, so what if he incited violence against his opponent and declares her bodyguards to be "volunteers". So what if for years he insisted that President Obama was not born on US soil and then yesterday changed his mind. So what? As I see it, the "what" is that he boldly lies for the fun of it just to see how far he can push it, and if he wins it will be deadly for this nation.

Let's also remember that according to politifact.com, it ws Hillary supporters in 2008 that started the "Birther" movement. Please go to their web site if you aren't sure, don't just trust your TV news. Please make sure you read it, don't just stop at their conclusion.

From the site

"There is no evidence that Clinton or her 2008 campaign ever floated the theory. While Clinton supporters circulated the allegations the last time she ran for president, they had no ties to either the candidate or her staff.

Apologies to James Asher for picking my battles.
Cynthia Somma

I can only say---that was a great trip to Princeton (in my view)
