Our Time Capsule
Recently, I met with our new Village Mayor, Adam H. Koblenz, Esq., and during our discussion I mentioned a time capsule buried on the Vilage Hall grounds and he expressed interest. Consequently, I did some digging and came up with the following blog:
A time capsule is a container storing a selection of objects chosen for being typical of the time of burial, for discovery in the future.
In June of 1981, I joined my sons David and Alex (pictured with the time capsule) in burying a time capsule on the 50th anniversary of our Village. The intention was and is to dig it up on the Village's 100th anniversary in 2031.
The contents of the capsule, contributed by then 13 year old David and 9 year old Alex were, inter alia, the previous Sunday New York Times edition, a Newsday front page story of the Columbia space shuttle blastoff disaster, a Rod Carew Topps baseball card, Mad Magazine, a Village directory, a 1981 penny, a photo of then President Reagan, a Disneyland tour guide, a Little League yearbook, an edition of the Roslyn News, an edition of the Roslyn Penny Saver, a Long Island Railroad time table, editions of Life Magazine, 2 poems written by Fred Klein, a Richie Rich comic book, Newsday funnies, a Roslyn Little League All Star hat, Alex Klein predictions as to the future and more...
Mad Magazine was made aware that one of their editions was included in the capsule and they subsequently informed that Alfred E. Newman planned to be present at the opening of the capsule in 2031.
I can't wait to dig up and open the capsule, see if Alex's predictions came true and if Alfred shows!
