Do We Change?
Posted By : Nancy Schess

This weekend, I was visiting with my mom, and we were cleaning up some papers in her house.  We came across a copy of the recommendation that my daughter’s high school guidance counselor had written to accompany her college applications.  Let’s do the math – that was nearly ten years ago. [Let’s also look right past the age spots sprouting on my ha

A client recently commented on a coaster I had on my desk. It was an item my youngest daughter had made for in nursery school.  She was given a small tray and inserted small ceramic tiles in it, using some sort of paste.    I have kept that coaster on my desk since she gave it to me, over twenty  years ago. I use it everyday for my coffee or water.

What's wrong with communicating correctly

Sometime after this commentary get posted to our Gotham Network's listserve, I compose a tweet and post it to twitter.  I do not like typos and unlike with Facebook, no current capability exists for twitter users to edit their tweets. Apparently, that may change.  Already the social media platform is testing an edit function with its employees and

Fear

A brilliant and influential man said:   "The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear."--Nelson Mandela   Is it really conquering fear that is brave? I believe we (humans) all have fear as we should. Fear has helped us, as a race, survive through the years. So being afraid is important. However, if fear drives you

Fantasy Super Power?

This blog is inspired by my good friend BingoJo Celi who originally conceived of the question “If you can have a Fantasy Super Power, what would it be?”Hers was being able to eat whatever she wanted without gaining weight. I have two: Being able to read minds and having tomorrow’s newspaper today.  And you?

Referrals

Referrals are such an important part of networking. Recently, we have been very involved in both receiving and giving referrals. We have learned that referrals can be complicated. An interesting and complicating aspect of referrals surfaced and it raises questions that should be considered when both giving and receiving referrals. What do you do when

High Tide Swimming

As you know and feel, this summer has been extremely hot.  The heat has been consistent with few days below 85 let alone 90.  I am very lucky to have an escape that works so well and is so close and cheap ($35 for a Senior couple)   Sea Cliff Beach on Hempstead Harbor (Long Island Sound) has a residents only beach with a cafe, umbrellas, chairs, sh

A Fast Food Indulgence
Posted By : Nancy Schess

I’ll admit it.  On occasion, I am a fast food fan.  Not always – but sometimes, when a guilty pleasure calls.   For me, that indulgence is always McDonalds. There is not much variation for me, it is a golden arches kind of thing with a nod to the best French Fries around.   Are you with me?

Changing Names
Posted By : Rona Gura

I recently read an interesting article in the New York Times. It concerned Jenifer Lopez’s decision to change her name from Jennifer Lopez to Jennifer Affleck after marrying Ben Affleck. The article discussed, extensively, the financial ramifications her name change could have on her “brand.”  The article asks whether JoLo would still be JoLo if sh

Two divergent shows by rock icons
Posted By : Corey Bearak

Two shows last week. Iconic artists. Both rescheduled from original dates. August 14, 2020 in the case of Rod Stewart. January 14 of this year in the case of Billy Joel. While we’ve seen both, it’d be the first time for each for Marisa who wanted to see each. While many around us at Jones Beach appeared to enjoy attending this performance by the fo

Heat

I'm very grateful I have air conditioning in my home, office and car this summer. It's been quite hot and I don't remember it being so. This inspired me to do a bit of research.   This is from NOAA: Since the beginning of the 20th century, temperatures in New York have risen almost 2.5°F, and temperatures in the 2000s have been higher than in any o

On Monday granddaughter Ruby visited and after a delicious bar pie lunch at Eddie’s Joanne led us through an artistic exercise denominated as Exquisite Corpse.  In essence, it is a collaborative Art exercise where each participant starts on their own folded piece of long sectioned paper intended to depict the torso of a figure without knowing of or

Cellphone Panic

I lost my cellphone….Or at least, for about an hour, I thought I had lost it.Years ago, I had lost my cellphone. Back then, the phone was simply a phone. In that hour of panic last week, I realized what my “phone” really was. As I traced my movements in desperate search, my thoughts were overwhelmed by the importance of my phone and the difficulty,

Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward are the subjects of a fascinating documentary series. If you liked their looks, movies, enjoyed their acting and directing, or ate Newman products, this series is for you.  Ethan Hawke was chosen to direct the project by Newman and Woodward’s youngest daughter, Clea Newman.   Hawke used a memoir that Newman had writt

Soup

I had soup for lunch.  I really enjoy all kinds of soup.   Did you notice that I didn’t say I “ate” soup or “drank” soup for lunch?  Let me add here to the raging debate – well, not really – about the proper articulation of enjoying soup.   To me, it is about the vessel and utensils utilized.  If my soup is in a bowl and I need to lift a spoon, the
