Changing Habits
Posted By : Rona Gura

As many of you know, prior to the pandemic, I habitually attended Weight Watcher (“WW”) Workshops on Saturday mornings. I had attended the meetings for years and, for me, it was integral part of my life’s journey. Given the context of the meetings and, what we each shared, I felt particularly close to my fellow attendees and coach.     Obviously,

Aftermath
Posted By : Corey Bearak

One of my fave Stones’ LPs, Aftermath, offers a fine title to this blog. Besides Tropical Storm Isaias cutting out my power (and thus cable and Internet), a fair amount of branches and leaves littered my yard and deck. My outside monitor, albeit covered also took a hit; its replacement, same as I use in my office, arrived midweek. It “rested in the

Was it yours?

Just recently, a Washington state library, in the midst of a rennovation, were removing a corner panel which, lo and behold, revealed a stash of beer and chewing gum from the 1980s. Ironically the panel was from a shelf housing the mystery book section. The stash contained five unopened cans of Hamm's beer and an opened back of Godzilla Heads gum.

Planned Obsolescence

When we came home from dinner last Friday night, it was a most welcome sight for sore eyes to see the pictured outdoor spotlights lit up for all their worth.   It got me to thinking that the spot lights were well worth their extra cost as they have been in constant use for at least 2 years.  They are the new, more expensive, “Long Life” bulbs. T

A Bad Driver?

Recently, I attended a webinar on the topic of Diversity and Inclusion and I heard the simplest, and most insightful, explanation of Implicit Bias that I have ever heard. I share it in the hope that it adds to each of our understandings and helps in our respective journeys toward better self-awareness. The speaker recalled that whenever his grandf

Is it Happening?

Finally! The end is in sight. December of 2018, my husband and I started building our new home. We bought the lot and began the selections process. It was supposed to take 8 months. Until, the wrong siding went up. That had to be taken off. Then, the windows in the primary bedroom were placed too close together. The windows had to be pulled out an

I Did It
Posted By : Nancy Schess

It has been a long time coming but I did it. I made the trip into the office and spent a day at my desk. Sure, it was different. Plexiglass everywhere, hand sanitizer literally every few steps, and a bucket of wipes the size of which I have never seen. Perhaps the most difficult change for me is the taped-up coffee machine. No communal coffee.

Safely Putting My Toes Back in the Water

I was extremely apprehensive about doing it, but the circumstances required it. To properly represent a client who was granted an Emergency Order of Protection, I appeared personally in the Family Court, in Nassau County last week. While the appearance could have been made virtually, my client and I decided that a personal appearance was necessary.

Power

Big news of the week involved so many of us – including this commentator – losing power last week.  Lost ours around 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday.  I reported to Con Edison via text message. Interestingly the text “process” never yield an approximate power up time.  News stories Wednesday suggested today.  Ouch! I worked with my local NY City Council Membe

More bubbly please

In this bizarro moment in time, here's a problem I think most of us can get behind.   “We are experiencing a crisis that we evaluate to be even worse than the Great Depression (1929-1939) in terms of economy for Champagne,” Thibaut Le Mailloux of the Champagne Committee said . “And if you look at a more recent crisis like 1974, the drop in Champagn

Stay at Home Chores
Posted By : Fred Klein

During our past reality, when I came home from a “Hard Days Work” Joanne would greet me with “How was your day?”, serve a great supper and ask for little help with the “House Wife” work. Now that we are mostly marooned at home the equation has shifted drastically. To say the least, since the onset of the pandemic, I have undergone significant chang

On the Line
Posted By : Benjamin Geizhals

We had just gotten on the short line outside the ice cream parlor. Two couples ahead of us. I felt the presence of a person behind me and turned around to see an older man without a mask — it was on his chin — uncomfortably close to me. As I turned to look forward and considered whether to say anything, a man ahead of me turned and called out “How

One Old Photo
Posted By : Nancy Schess

Have you ever noticed how much meaning an old, frayed picture holds? And if it is in black and white, it is like sunshine in December! This past weekend, I was at my mom’s house. I went downstairs for something and found old photos strewn across the downstairs bedroom. I suspect that they were left over from Hurricane Sandy. Her downstairs was l

Celebrating Creatively

Since March 23, 2020, when New York State officially closed down, my family has celebrated five birthdays, including my own. Three birthdays have been milestones, my two now twenty-five year old’s and my now thirty year old.     Prior to March 23, 2020, my family would celebrate birthdays by having the person whose birthday it was choose their fav

Summer’s almost gone

Summer’s almost gone   Yeah it’s almost gone.   Above are lyrics from song of the first phrase by the Doors. The LP is Waiting for the Sun.   It goes back 52 years.   It concludes with a question,“where will we be?   In this summer of Covid what do you wish for the fall and winter. In part I post the question as we continue to face limits on some a
