La Liz and the Tony's -- A Guest Blog by Jane Jacobs
Posted By : Nancy Schess

A Guest Blog by Jane Jacobs   On Sunday night I had the great good fortune to be a plus one to the Tony Awards, a thrilling once-in-a-lifetime experience. Through the night I was surprised to run into a couple of acquaintances - parents of my daughter’s classmate, that sort of thing, but during the awards I made an astounding small world connection

Paying it Forward
Posted By : Nancy Schess

I carry a small card case that doubles as a wallet.  It comes in handy.   One day recently as I was busily departing my LIRR train, I couldn’t find the case.  I was doing the standard – check one last time for everything important – departure dance but couldn’t find it.   It was distinctly possible, I concluded, that the wallet was on my desk and s

Our Family Veterans

It seems fitting on Memorial Day when I am writing my blog to remember both my dad and my husband’s dad.   Much to my mother’s chagrin, my dad enlisted.  It was the tail end of the Korean War but he wanted to serve his country.  Mom wasn’t his wife yet but  they had pledged their lives to each other and off he went.   It is hard to imagine what it

Travel Plans?
Posted By : Nancy Schess

Have any?    I’m starting to think about the summer and wondering where we might run for a quick weekend or two.  No big plans in our future, I’m afraid, but a quick getaway or two sounds nice.   Where have you visited recently for a quick trip? Maybe I will get an idea from you.

If I Could . . .
Posted By : Nancy Schess

A few weeks ago, during a presentation I paused to ask the audience of lawyers to fill in the blank in this sentence, “If I could pass a law, it would . . . “   Think about that – but not too hard because that is not the topic of my blog.  Close, but not exactly the same.   I want to give all of you out there the opportunity to create.  Finish this

The Facebook Memory Feature
Posted By : Nancy Schess

I have to admit that I enjoy the memories that show up in my feed every morning.  The photo stroll in most instances is a happy trip down some memory lane, near or far.   Most recently, the stroll was from my son’s last performance with his college Acappella group two years ago, just before college graduation.  What a night.   The seniors all had s

Summertime
Posted By : Nancy Schess

Every year, I look forward to the kick off of spring and the move to my deck.  Working outside in my backyard is my happy place.   I feel like yesterday was a false start.  It was over 80 degrees and sunny on Long Island and I was longing to get outside.  Unfortunately, my backyard wasn’t ready for me.  Our furniture is still wrapped in plastic.

What Are You Binging?

We just finished The Bear.  It was slow starting, but Season 2 was spectacular.  Such great acting and character development.   Soon Bridgerton will be back I’m told but The Gilded Age is a long time away.  We spent weeks and weeks getting through The Americans, sitting on the edge of our seats.  And, we are still waiting for a release date of Shri

Never Would I Ever
Posted By : Nancy Schess

Now, this is a blast from the past.   How many of you out there grew up with plastic slipcovers on the living room couch?    If you are there with me, remember the whooshing noise they made when you sat down?  How about, what it felt like to stand up from the hot cushions in the heat of the summer?  Or, how the sharp edges on the corners felt just

The First Time Back
Posted By : Nancy Schess

We would have ventured back to a movie theatre ages ago but frankly, just did not have the opportunity.  OK, in truth, maybe we became a little lazy during the pandemic. There is something very relaxing about pajamas, a glass of wine and a movie or binge worthy show on my big screen TV. And, during the pandemic, the choices became very plentiful.

Our Visit to Loxton Cellars
Posted By : Nancy Schess

One of the highlights of our recent trip to northern California was a luxurious day spent in Sonoma.  My daughter planned the whole excursion for the four of us – complete with door to door service and a scrumptious midday lunch.  Next time I see you, I encourage you to ask to see pictures.   One of the vineyards we visited was Loxton Cellars where

Family

Anyone who knows me at all, knows how important family is in my world.  It is not just about those in my immediate circle.  I appreciate all family – mine and everyone else’s too.   I also appreciate being a student of family.  I am always taken with how our ancestors came to be together from generations before.   I will tell a story – and one that

Off Off Off and More Off Broadway

And fantastic!   We are great fans of local theatre.  Frankly, we are great fans of theatre anywhere.  Make it a musical, and we are in heaven. I can pretty much guarantee that we are the singing and swaying couple at most musicals.   Recently we went to see A Chorus Line at The Argyle Theatre in Babylon, Long Island.  What a wonderful performance.

What Would You Do?

Recently, I was privy to the following dilemma.   A local mom complained that she sends birthday cards gifts to her grown children, their spouses and her grandchildren every year but over the last number of years there has been no sign of any reciprocation.  What should she do was the question of the moment?   The universal opinion was to keep send
