Goodbye Grandma
Posted By : Nancy Schess

We said goodbye to Bill’s mom on Sunday. I’ve blogged about her in the past and many of you have heard me talk about my mother in law. She was a sharp, intelligent woman who loved good conversation not only about family but the important issues of the world. She was most knowledgeable both because she was an avid reader and because she lived thr

Way Too Fast
Posted By : Nancy Schess

Anyone else feeling like December is just going way too fast this year?   I’ve been planning January for the last two weeks. Usually I don’t get there until just right about now.     I’m not sure what I think about this holiday speed. I love the holiday season. It is chock full of celebrations and good feelings. I prefer for it to linger for a

Please Please Don’t Make Me Go Back
Posted By : Nancy Schess

There are very few things that get me more riled up than wasting someone’s time, including my own.     Have you had the experience yet of going down to your DMV to get a new Enhanced Drivers License? Well, if not, I suggest some deep breathings exercise, a little meditation, or perhaps a bottle of wine before you go.     I did not have any of

I Remember
Posted By : Nancy Schess

Well, I think I do.     At this time of year I am reminded of what I always credit as my first memory.     I can’t say for sure that it was actually November 22, 1963 but at some point within the few days that followed, I was sitting on my dad’s lap in his recliner in our den. We were watching a news report of President Kennedy’s death. I do

Ninety-Six
Posted By : Nancy Schess

I’ve written about my mother in law before but after a recent visit, I had to write again.     She is ninety-six and clear as a bell. So, count backwards with me. She was born in 1922. Think about the history that she lived through and remembers in glorious detail.     During our time together last week, she was in a story telling mood. That’

No More Cash
Posted By : Nancy Schess

Perhaps it’s the end of an era.     One of my local regular lunch haunts had a big sign in the window last week. “Effective 11/11, we will no longer accept cash.”     I must admit that I usually use a credit card to buy lunch. But I wondered what it would mean if I just wanted to stop in for a cup of coffee. Credit card too? What if someone c

Welcome to Tuesday
Posted By : Nancy Schess

I know that my blog topic is a repeat. Corey very eloquently blogged about the importance of voting on Sunday.     But it's Tuesday and as you are all reading this, a critical election is happening all around us. How could I blog about any topic other than the importance of exercising our collective right to vote?     Whether we all agree or

A Little Quiet
Posted By : Nancy Schess

Used to be that I would look forward to alone time in the car to crank up the radio and sing at the top of my lungs.     But, I’ve noticed lately that my radio habits have completely changed. Instead of looking for some old Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen or yes, even Barry Manilow, I don’t even reach for the power button to turn the radio on.

Home Delivery

I have to admit I’m intrigued.     There are so many “meal in the box” services popping up. To me, one looks better than the next. The ingredients look fresh and to make it even more appealing, there would be absolutely no need for me to step foot into a supermarket.     Anyone out there had an experience using one of these services?

Breaking News
Posted By : Nancy Schess

Well, maybe not really breaking news.     I cannot take credit for this thought but I have to say it stuck with me. A Sunday morning news commentator posited the following observation which resonated with me.     Do you remember the feeling that came along with that ominous, but extraordinarily rare, announcement of “Breaking News”? I do. It

Baseball Memories
Posted By : Nancy Schess

In this ongoing playoff season, I started to think about my own baseball memories. Growing up, my grandfather was the biggest baseball fan around me. When you think of favorite people in your life, he ranks very high.     He was a huge Mets fan. Whenever a game was on, you could find him planted in front of the television cheering on his team.
