A Fast Food Indulgence
Posted By : Nancy Schess

I’ll admit it.  On occasion, I am a fast food fan.  Not always – but sometimes, when a guilty pleasure calls.   For me, that indulgence is always McDonalds. There is not much variation for me, it is a golden arches kind of thing with a nod to the best French Fries around.   Are you with me?

Soup
Posted By : Nancy Schess

I had soup for lunch.  I really enjoy all kinds of soup.   Did you notice that I didn’t say I “ate” soup or “drank” soup for lunch?  Let me add here to the raging debate – well, not really – about the proper articulation of enjoying soup.   To me, it is about the vessel and utensils utilized.  If my soup is in a bowl and I need to lift a spoon, the

Parenting and Baseball

I am sure you have all seen the news story about the Little League World Series game where two young players displayed not only sportsmanship but compassion.    In an emotional moment, the pitcher sent off a fastball that just got away from him.  Without any intention of injuring the batter, he nonetheless did.  The batter hit the ground and stayed

Naptime
Posted By : Nancy Schess

Anyone remember saying these words out loud when your kids were young only to be met with growling, pleading for five more minutes or some creative bargaining?  Feels like yesterday to me.   They say that youth is wasted on the young.   I have learned that I am huge fan of a nap.  Perhaps I have always been a fan of twenty minutes stolen here and t

Of Course!
Posted By : Nancy Schess

Has anyone else noticed that “of course” has become the new form of “you’re welcome”?  Thank you is now often met with “of course”.   Thank you for picking up dinner — “of course!”.    Thanks so much for helping me with that project — “of course!”.  Thanks so much for making me laugh — “of course!”.  You get the drift.    To be honest, I find mysel

Do You?
Posted By : Nancy Schess

Here is my question for all of you.  Do you still have a land line at home and if so, why?   As my son plans his move to a new apartment in a new city, he signed up for internet and cable with the local provider.  It was not even a glimmer of a passing thought to have an actual phone line.   Of course, in the end – why should he?  He has a cell pho

The Luxury of Cold Air
Posted By : Nancy Schess

It is hot outside, really hot.  And I am a fan of cold, really cold.  Artificially cooled air that is, not the winter blustery kind.   I am a happy woman with air conditioning set in the low 60s at night.  Better for sleeping but I’m pretty sure my husband does not agree with me, which I glean from the pile of fuzzy sleeping socks he has collected

The Handwritten Note
Posted By : Nancy Schess

Here was the discussion in my house – and hint, it split down generational lines.  Of course, when someone sends you a gift, a thank you note is called for.  It is just a small way to show appreciation for someone who took the time to think about you.   Under what circumstances is a handwritten thank you note required, and when will a text or emai

It's Time for a Good Book
Posted By : Nancy Schess

Summertime cries out for a good book – well, add a beach and a glass of wine, but still with a good book.   Lately, I’ve been more connected to binge watching mini-series on Netflix.  We are about half way through Ted Lasso and finding it a little addictive, kind of like a good book you can’t just put down.   But as we head into summer, it’s time f

A Big Old Tree
Posted By : Nancy Schess

We have one and I have often cursed it.  That tree takes up a good part of our back yard.  Swing set?  No room.  A pool?  The whole neighborhood would have been disrupted.  In fact, I have always been convinced that our house, actually our entire neighborhood, was planned around that tree.   Most days, I’m complaining about the berries that slam in

A Happy Place
Posted By : Nancy Schess

I learned this from Corey early on in the pandemic.    After being stuck inside for the last of the winter months in 2020, spring arrived with summer right behind.  I learned that my office no longer needed to be inside  in a stuffy room behind a closed door.    Instead, on a beautiful day I could set up my entire office outside – double monitors

And They Grow
Posted By : Nancy Schess

I have had occasion recently to hang out with some young adults – who I first knew as young children.  You know, those kids your kids grew up with, played baseball, dance competitions, trick or treating.  You get it.   I keep having that “I blinked” experience.   Each of these terrifically impressive young professionals was just a minute ago trying

Apartment Hunting
Posted By : Nancy Schess

Some of you may already know (well really, if you’ve spent a minute with me recently I’m sure you know because I’ve been busting with pride).    My son landed a dream job and he is moving halfway to Florida.  That move sent us apartment hunting for his dream first apartment in a city brand new to all of us.   Amongst friends, I’ll age myself.  In

A New City
Posted By : Nancy Schess

For my travel friends out there, I have a question for you.  How do you plan a visit to a new city? What are the special things you are looking for?   Historic sites? Beaches? Weather? Restaurants? Sports activities?   It occurred to me that invariably, I always start with the food experiences.  My son’s girlfriend dubbed us a family where food is
