A Solo Surprise
Posted By : Nancy Schess

Sometimes I think our blogs are a selfish exercise. How lucky we are to have your attention every week where we can write about anything, anything at all. My selfish exercise this week is to tell the story of my Saturday evening. My 14 year old son loves to sing. This year he auditioned for and was selected to perform with the Nassau Symphonic C

RoboCall Mania
Posted By : Nancy Schess

I am very excited, indeed grateful, that Election Day is here. I am a great supporter of every citizen’s right and obligation to vote. But that is not what prompts today’s reaction. I am looking forward to Election Day so that the robocalls will stop. Really, 10 calls a day, sometimes more. Last night alone I received 10 calls within 10 minutes.

Teach Your Children Well
Posted By : Nancy Schess

One day last week, I was at the tail end of my commute but it was very crowded. Two trains hit the 5th Avenue station within minutes of each other and so there was barely room to walk. As the group started slowly climbing the stairs, I noticed a man somewhat ahead of me struggling to climb. He was moving slowly and the people around him were clea

My Second Ticket
Posted By : Nancy Schess

I try. I really do. But it is hard to keep track of all of the school zones in my neighborhood. And to make it worse, they are barely marked. But, since the local law changed recently, none of that really matters. Anyone who lives or works in Nassau County knows what I am talking about. The whole thing makes little sense to me and particularly sin

Traffic
Posted By : Nancy Schess

When I first started driving more years ago than I will admit, I had lots of patience. Driving along on the Belt Parkway was a treat (yes, I was born and raised in Brooklyn) even when that sea of red lights showed up ahead. I remember so distinctly just turning the radio up and doing a lot of singing. Mostly Barry Manilow, Billy Joel and Bruce Spri

Gym Time
Posted By : Nancy Schess

I am not spending enough time in the gym. It’s really that simple. With a long work day and worse, a commute on both ends, time to get to the gym during the week just doesn’t seem to be happening. I know I am not the only one with this problem. We all struggle with not having enough time in the day. For those of you who have figured out how to ad

To Play or Not to Play
Posted By : Nancy Schess

I can’t believe I am even writing this blog.  Sports commentary is very much outside my comfort zone. But I did see the hit and it looked really bad. Today's question is should the Michigan football coach have taken sophmore quarterback Shane Morris out of the game after what appeared to be a concussion inducing hit – after which Morris exhibited

I Sent A Fax

Along with what seemed like a good part of the neighborhood, we had no internet service today. Let's not talk about why, and how frustrating it was. Instead, let's talk about how far we have come in a short time. Today, we all rely on email, scanning, forwarding documents, etc. as just an ordinary, albeit important, part of the day. (Rona made a g

Would You?
Posted By : Nancy Schess

Have you heard of Air BNB? Interesting concept where ordinary people – just like you and me – offer their homes as accommodations to strangers. They say it is all vetted and if you want to be a host you must meet the Company’s standards. That said, would you use this service? Has anyone in our Gotham family tried to? On the flipside, would you

Happiness -- A Personal Choice
Posted By : Nancy Schess

Like Rona, I thought that this topic was going to be a cinch but in the end, I don’t think it is. What makes one person happy may be vastly different from what brings a smile to another. Sure, there are probably themes but when you dig down deep, where does happiness really come from for you? For me, I call on life’s moments and so thought I wou

It's Getting Close -- The Must Haves and Must Nots
Posted By : Nancy Schess

My house is all consumed right now with college prep. Not the figuring out what school to go to kind – but the shopping, packing and generally getting ready to leave kind. I will save until later in the month the blog about sending my oldest off to college. I am trying hard not to think too much about that day – it’s not going to be pretty! (I am s

Tragedy
Posted By : Nancy Schess

If you are on Long Island and read the story, it happened Sunday afternoon at the pool at Syosset-Woodbury Park. 44 years old and in his prime, leaving his wife and two children. A tragic ending to the life of a colleague and friend. A smart, generous person who knew how to connect with people; not to mention, a really good lawyer. I know that t

Ssshhhhh!!!

Following a summertime tradition, last night after dinner Bill and I went for ice cream to our local Carvel. As we were sitting outside, all of a sudden I noticed that we were both quiet. Now, the two girls sitting on the bench next to us were not quiet at all but we were doing that thing – you know, admit it, you do it too. Our ice cream eating e

What Goes Around Really Does Come Around

It is a rite of passage for a 16 year old to go down to DMV for that coveted driver’s permit. A day filled with excitement and anticipation. Imagine your horror when you go to look for your permit one day and realize it’s not there. Change scenes. Last week, my husband stopped at the local 7 Eleven for a cup of coffee. As he was walking up to th

A Moment to Remember
Posted By : Nancy Schess

Last Wednesday, my daughter graduated from high school. It was a memorable night in our family but even more memorable for another local family. The speeches had ended. The principal and school board members had started the process of announcing each (and every) name and personally handing each of the 580 graduates a well-earned diploma. Midway t
