Living With A Puppy
Posted By : Fred Klein

My son David and his family have a non allergic dog named Lucy. She's a schnoodle. When they go away she stays with us. It did not take long for us to love her (and her breed). Because I'm allergic to dogs, we have not had one in many many years. However, Lucy broke through and as a result I agreed to Joanne's request that we get a puppy, as long a

I Crossed Over (This is not a paid advertisement)

As many may know I have been a long adherent of the BlackBerry. Why? Mostly because of the keyboard which for me was far easier to use than a touchscreen. Then my trusty Blackberry went dead and when I went to the Verizon store to look at the newest model I learned, to my alarm, that it too had a touchscreen and not a keyboard. It was a true moment

Just Sayings
Posted By : Fred Klein

I had planned to write about Gotham's 13th annual Bob Formica Golf Outing, but Mother Nature intervened on Monday and we were compelled to postpone it until August 19th.   During the course of my reading I oft times coming across a memorable quote which I write down in my diary for future reference.  I call them "Just Sayings" and here is this year

He Said She Said

In Robert Heinlein's mid 20th Century classic "Stranger in a Strange Land" he invented the concept of the "Fair Witness, an individual trained to observe events and report exactly what he or she sees and hears, making no extrapolations or assumptions.  I always thought he should have dubbed them the "Perfect Witness". Of course, today a good taping

Risk

Do you have an appetite for risk?Risk can take many forms: physical, financial, social, emotional, intellectual, creative, legal and (feel free to add more to fill in the blank). As one who espouses a "Dare to be great" philosophy I have taken risks in my career, but as I mature my wife perceives a growing tendancy towards risk aversion. Maybe I've

Failure
Posted By : Fred Klein

Failure is something which we all inevitably experience, one time or another, in our lifetime. That said, I feel that failure gets a bad rap. The common impression is that failure should be avoided and covered up at all costs. To the contrary, it is the fear of failure that is the negative. Thus, playing it safe is the common approach. However, as

Fine Wine

I am one of the few Gothamites qualified to opine on the virtues of age. Yes, it creeps up on you and suddenly you are "Mr. Klein" and your hair is silver (not gray). You learn to accept a new consciousness and state of mind (which still harbors youthful thoughts, desires and aspirations). You find yourself (semi proudly) stating, rather than hidin

Tears

Last Friday I sat with Gotham Executive Director Debbie Lindner at a lunch honoring our Annamarie Bondi-Stoddard. The luncheon was hosted by The United Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County. Any time I am with Annamarie and Debbie (plus a goodly number of other Gothamites) it is guaranteed to be a very nice time, but this time was even more s

Unintended Consequences
Posted By : Fred Klein

Last Friday Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick took the unprecedented decision to shut down all of Boston and its near environs. The shut down was coined "Shelter in place" and intended to facilitate the massive manhunt for the "White Hat" bomber. However, as the hours ticked by and there was no capture, the political and practical pressure must

The Boston Marathon
Posted By : Fred Klein

When I was young I was addicted to long distance running. In fact I finished 33 (26.2 mile) marathons in my running career, but the only one that mattered was the Mecca of distance running: The Boston Marathon. "Boston" was the goal and inorder to be eligible to participate you had to achieve a qualifying time (under 3 hours and 10 minutes) at anot

If I Had It To Do Over Again
Posted By : Fred Klein

I'm pretty sure that if I had my life to live over I would not be a lawyer. When I was growing up my sole interest was baseball and my goal was to replace my Idol Mickey Mantle in center field for the Yankees. As such, I was not much of a student and only the rude intrusion  of the Viet Nam era draft caused me to alter my plans. Suddenly, a law scho

Birthday Message
Posted By : Fred Klein

My birthday was last week and my wife Joanne greeted me at breakfast with a card that said "Life Isn't About Finding Yourself. Life Is About Creating Yourself. (Unknown)"Surely, this is a universal message. Take it to heart and aspire toinspire others to compliment you, as Jo did by adding "You are a piece of work!" to the card.

Tell It Like It Is!

My wife Joanne was my high school girl friend and we have been married 46 years. Among the many many things she brings to our marriage is that of the great "Leveler". She has an inexhaustible capacity to cut through all the spin, puff and noise to bring me down and ground me. This is a not always pleasant for me, but I know it is a good thing as, f
