Hurricane
Posted By : Fred Klein

Here's hoping that Hurricane Matthew peters out. Here's hoping that the East coast is spared and that damage and injury is minimized.   Right now we don't know the full impact and then there's the possibility that it will curl around and return to hit Florida again.   Mother Nature is all powerful. Here's hoping she is merciful!

Homecoming
Posted By : Fred Klein

Last Saturday I went back to our old High School (we still live in Roslyn) to take in the Roslyn High School Homecoming football game.  So many memories welled up, eg, it is the same field on which Joanne was a cheer leader and upon which I played soccer.  Better yet, I was joined by my son David and grandson Jackson, Roslyn High School attendees a

Book Clubs
Posted By : Fred Klein

I belong to 2 Book Clubs, yet I do not read.  Rather, I  commute to the city by car and listen to books on CD.  It is a very nourishing way to pass the time. I belong to an all male book group which is presently reading James Kaplan's great biography:  Sinatra: The Chairman. I also belong to the Gotham Book Club.  The Gotham Book Club is the brain

Rashomon
Posted By : Fred Klein

Rashomon was an iconic 1950 Japanese movie wherein a number of eye witnesses to a horrendous event each had a different version as to what happened. The Rashomon effect is contradictory interpretations of the same event by different people.  It is said that the effect is not only based on differences in perspective, but occurs where such difference

It's A Shame!

On June 9, 1954, during the Army-McCarthy Hearings in Washington, D.C. Joseph Welch, Chief Counsel for the United States Army, had had just enough and famously said "until this moment, Senator, I think I never really gauged your cruelty, or your recklessness....have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last?"Have you had just enough?

Big Sexy
Posted By : Fred Klein

Big Sexy is the affectionate ironic nickname pinned on the Mets 43 year old 285 pound pitcher Bartolo Colon who has been the winning pitcher in 230 big league games in a MLB career which started in the last century (1997). That's a lot to say about an ever smiling Dominican man who has become the people's choice.  He can do no wrong! He just has thi

Rupp Runs Olympic Marathon
Posted By : Fred Klein

On Sunday I watched American runner Galen Rupp win a Bronze medal in the Olympic 26.2 mile Marathon race with special empathetic interest.  Some may know that Gotham General Counsel Ben Geizhals was my marathon running partner.  We lived by the mantra of "Miles of trials and trials of miles" for a 10 year period in which we devoted ourselves to man

My Turkey Sandwich
Posted By : Fred Klein

Last Sunday I had the best turkey sandwich I've ever tasted in my life. The fresh turkey was moist and it had (our) garden fresh tomatoes, spicy Dijon mustard and crispy lettuce blanketing it on a seeded soft roll.  See photo. It was having a party in my mouth!  Yum! Thanks and props to the maker (Jo) from the eater!

A Rod's Last Game
Posted By : Fred Klein

Tonight is A Rod's last game. Or is it?After 22 Big League seasons during which he struck 696 home runs while failing two performance enhancing drug tests Alex Rodriguez is a complicated, untruthful tarnished star with a still huge Yankee contract guaranteed through 2017.  In an emotional press conference last Sunday A Rod spoke the Yankee party li

Old School
Posted By : Fred Klein

I was recently sitting with a young man who is just starting out in the business world.  Nearby were a bunch of DJs wearing colorful foot gear.  In an attempt to be cool and with it, I called his attention to their "Kicks".  I was amazed, if not deflated and put off, when he shot back "They are Jordans, Kicks is old fashioned".I let it go and chalk

We All Need Somebody To Love
Posted By : Fred Klein

Tomorrow will be the 50th anniversary of my marriage to my high school sweet heart, Joanne Carol Davidson.  When we got married the war in Vietnam was raging and we did not have a clue.  At best, we had a no plan plan.  Yes, we had our ups and downs, but somehow we did the right thing, got the breaks, seized opportunities, lived within our means, h

Bulbs
Posted By : Fred Klein

For more years than I am willing to admit I have gone to my local hardware store to buy a dozen outdoor spotlight bulbs for a 10% volume discount (buy local). At first I didn't notice, but after the passage of time I realized that the bulbs were blowing with cash register regularity. Being somewhat thrifty or penurious, I eschewed local loyalty and

Truth Is Stranger Than Fiction
Posted By : Fred Klein

You can't make this stuff up!A while back I was minding my own business when I received an out of the blue call from someone who claimed his father had died and that he went to the Department of Motor Vehicles to turn in his dad's car plates.  He claimed he discovered later that a one digit mistake had been made and that rather than his father's, m
