Decade (aka an anniversary)
Posted By : Corey Bearak

It’s the name of a Neil Young compilation from 1977 covering 1966-1976.   A ten-year period that gives some meaning to a relationship many in Gotham believe spans a time much longer.   It involves Gotham and I did not even mention it at the Picnic which included a competitive softball game that ended on a controversial play: a ball rolling foul got

The best...ever
Posted By : Corey Bearak

With my daughter back in town, she took up offers to join me at Citifield and Madison Square Garden on successive days. The Mets, in an afternoon game without any input from their “Polar Bear” parked a record six shots over the fence; not bad to attend a record breaking game and of course a victory, 11-1 over the D-Backs. The next eve we took in a

Return to Grand Junction
Posted By : Corey Bearak

It’s a new beginning today.   Yes my Jets start their season this afternoon with many of us holding rather high expectations, especially for the offense. I certainly plan to tune in this afternoon. But today’s blog covers another re-boot of sorts.   This beginning involves a homecoming of sorts.  A return to New York. Several years ago our daughter

You may know I chair the board of director of Services Now for Adults Person, Inc. (“SNAP”) which also includes two fellow Gothamites – Mindy Stern and Renee Richter on its board. SNAP provides direct services to enhance the quality of life of older adults. Operating senior centers serving northeast and southeast Queens, SNAP also delivers meals on

Black Coffee
Posted By : Corey Bearak

I started my day with Black Coffee. If you read last week’s blog (or viewed my last post to Gotham’s RockRap Music listserve), you already know why.   One word (or title or name).  Squeeze.   We took in one of my fave bands last night at The Rooftop at Pier 17 at the South Street Seaport. I viewed some set lists for shows the band led by Glenn Tilb

A Very Melodious August
Posted By : Corey Bearak

We saw some really great shows so far this year. And it’s not impossible that by the time this month passes nothing can top 2019’s August. Already this month we saw Poco co-founder Jim Messina (perhaps better known for his work with Kenny Loggins) August 5 at current fave venue, My Father’s Place. This past Thursday at Radio City Music Hall, we enj

Magic back?
Posted By : Corey Bearak

Two Sunday blogs ago I opted to focus on three reasons to consider still watching a then failing Mets team. I asked if my team might get hot. It did! It is.  Who'd thunk it?   Through last night 15 Ws out of 16 games, including two comeback wins against the Nationals this weekend.   As mentioned in that previous blow we took in the game Wednesday:

Roanoke

Last weekend we enjoyed the first use of our verified TSA enrollments. It involved a short flight to Roanoke. As to the lines, we appeared not to save much time, since we caught a not so busy time. Nonetheless, I enjoyed not needing to shed my sneakers and unpack the Mac, iPad and iPhone. And we enjoyed that same convenience on the return trip. Lig

A squirrel, a polar bear and the degrominator.

The Baseball season appears not to be going the way I’d prefer. Many friends probably agree, if they root for the team based in Queens.   Still, many things remain to root for. One player, Jeff McNeil, pursues a batting title. Peter Alonso won the Home Run contest, shattered several Mets records for rookies (Homers, RBIs XBHs) and remains much in p

No (E)Mail Today

Do you bother to “unsubscribe” from “junk” and other unsolicited “emails?   I generally just hit delete. I found it quick enough as I processed emails.   More recently, I moved such “offenders” to my junk folder first.   On a spare after hours moment(s), I take to going through the emails, determining which of my emails the solicitation was directe

Doin' Fine (or Doing Fine)
Posted By : Corey Bearak

I found myself perusing my calendar. Many a friend shared how they feel Summer’s Almost Gone.   Of course the preceding phrase made me think of a song from the Doors iconic third LP, Waiting for the Sun. We only are in the second weekend of July. All of August remains and two full weekends and more of the current month.   I recall as a youth that

Another Gotham Knight at Citifield
Posted By : Corey Bearak

Independence Eve my wife and I enjoyed hanging out with some 250 of our closest friends, their spouses, (some of their) other family members, their friends and associates, and some clients. What better place to hold such a gathering than Citifield, home of my beloved (albeit underperforming in won-loss records and certain aspects of playing a game

Once a year, weather permitting friends primarily from high school gather for a BBQ in a courtyard outside a co-op in Bell Park Manor Terrace in Queens Village. Last summer, a wash out and some other circumstances made for a missed year. The year the rain threatened our gathering. A cancellation notice went out yesterday morning. Midday I receive a

A Season to Give
Posted By : Corey Bearak

With the start of summer, Gotham initiates a Season of Giving. At last’s Thursday’s meeting of Gotham Queens (which I nicknamed “GQ” when it rebooted under new leadership a few years back), we circulated an envelope. The idea is fives, tens and twenties much the way grass-roots on line fundraising is the craze in politics. The difference: instead o

A Day to Celebrate Our Dads

I shared many times since I scored this Sunday blog "gig" (Some who covet one of the days might call it an ("honor.") how I look forward to blogging on days such as these; I get to post on the actual day.  No different here.  Keeping with tradition, I offer this wonderful song for this special day by current Poco bassist and vocalist Jack Sundrud.
