A Retired Physician
Posted By : Benjamin Geizhals

We were in Montreal a few weeks ago on an art tour with like-minded friends from the Art Alliance for Contemporary Glass. At dinner one evening one of the participants fell sick requiring a call to medics and, ultimately, several hours at the emergency room before he was stabilized. He’s fine, notwithstanding his experience in a Canadian hospital.Du

Perfect Weather

It is hard to express how perfect the weather in the New York area has been. The air conditioning can be turned off. Windows open. The air is crisp and clear and clean.Enjoy it while we can.

Late Evening
Posted By : Benjamin Geizhals

This blog was inspired by Tuesday’s Long Island Women’s Group meeting....As I was deleting emails on my phone the other evening, an email dropped down from a client updating some information. It was late and I usually would not have been looking at emails (but for my compulsion to clean out my inbox).Instinctively, I forwarded the client’s email to

Tipping
Posted By : Benjamin Geizhals

It is increasingly rare that I see a restaurant check without a suggested gratuity amount. Now there are more of the remote devices presented by the server which offer the suggested tip as a prerequisite to having your credit card returned. The paper slip with the suggestions (on the pre-tax amount?) and the pen will soon go the way of the dinosaur.

The Wiper Blade
Posted By : Benjamin Geizhals

I thought it would be a simple thing. The rear windshield wiper blade was gone. Upon inspection, it looked like the clip was broken, but I couldn’t tell whether it was simple replacement or if the bracket was damaged.I called the service department in the hope that I could stop by and have someone take a quick look and assess the situation. The ser

The T Shirt
Posted By : Benjamin Geizhals

We had dinner at one of our favorite restaurants on Martha’s Vineyard. After dinner, I went to the owner, Jenna, who we’ve known for many years, to thank her for the wonderful meal.I noticed that the T-shirt worn by the waitstaff was available. The shirt simply said “Chilmark Tavern - B.Y.O.B.”(Since the Town of Chilmark is a “dry town” you have to

Traffic and ....

We’re on Martha’s Vineyard and as we drove from the ferry to our destination, I was quickly reminded that there is a lot of traffic on this island. And there is a lot of courtesy on this island.Courtesy makes traffic much more tolerable.

Spotted Lantern Fly
Posted By : Benjamin Geizhals

With the invasion of the Spotted Lantern Fly, the expression “ I wouldn’t harm a fly!” is being turned on its head.I am one who, literally, wouldn’t harm a fly. Routinely I’ll capture a bug or spider in the house and release it outside. With the first news of the invasion of the Spotted Lantern Fly in our area and the potential devastation caused by

Writing

We recently went to the gift show (Shoppe Object) on the never-ending search for Refined Finds. What surprised me was the number of vendors offering writing supplies and encouraging writing. Notebooks, papers, cards, pens and pencils. All dedicated to getting thoughts from the mind through the arm, hand and fingers to whomever. Whether for introspec

Watching ?
Posted By : Benjamin Geizhals

Are you watching? With all due respect to Roger (and any other world-class swimmer Gothamites) I’m not sure that I would ever turn on the TV to watch swimming (or archery). But here we are for the every four year spectacular — the Olympics. With all the human interest and a small dose of national pride, I watch and, sometimes, cheer.

Masks
Posted By : Benjamin Geizhals

Having recently been exposed to Covid, and with the protocols having rescinded into memory, I was left to my own devices.I pulled out the box of N-95s and wore one when I walked around the office or when in a room with others. When alone in my office I closed the door and the mask came off.People may have looked at me strangely, and when asked, I re

"Interesting"
Posted By : Benjamin Geizhals

"Interesting". We all know what it means.Clients tell me that they never want you to hear that their situation is “interesting”. Leave "interesting" for someone else. And so it was that I was in pre-op as the anesthesiologist reviewed a potential complication in my case.“This is interesting”, she said.I laughed and told her that that was the last t

A New Tradition
Posted By : Benjamin Geizhals

On July 4th, James Taylor celebrated his fiftieth anniversary of Fourth of July concerts at Tanglewood - the renowned music venue in Lenox Massachusetts.I love traditions. Although we’ve seen James Taylor at Tanglewood many times, we were not there last week. Instead, we’ve were extending our own tradition - in its third year - of having our family

The Grasshopper
Posted By : Benjamin Geizhals

We noticed the little Grasshopper on the car’s side mirror as we drove down the street from our house. She was going for a ride to a destination unknown.Would it be an adventure or a new beginning? Perhaps both.I thought of man’s place in the ecosystem — transporting insects great distances.I thought of the little unplanned encounters that become th
