Who Earns What?

Who Earns What?

I have to thank Corey Bearak for the following blog topic. He sent me an article from the NY Times. Essentially the article began as follows:

The share of women who earn more than their husbands, while still relatively small, is growing. When women do earn more, both husbands and wives seem uncomfortable — to the point of lying about it.

That’s the finding of a new paper from the Census Bureau, which compared what respondents told census surveyors about their earnings with what their employers told the Internal Revenue Service in tax filings.

In reading the article, I have to honestly admit that I was not surprised by the findings. When I married my first husband, I was working in a large New York City law firm and he had just started his own accounting practice. As such, I was earning significantly more than him. When we applied for a mortgage to buy our house, he was extremely uncomfortable upon learning that the mortgage we received was based solely on my salary.

While that occurred over twenty-five years ago, I am not sure that our perception of the proper differentials in male and female salary has changed all that much. According to the Census Bureau it has not. What do you think?
