When We Were Young

When We Were Young

Recently, I organized a reunion of fellow contemporary graduates of my Syracuse University alma mater.

It was held at the University's mid town New York City "Embassy", Lubin House, a beautiful, circa 1876, brown stone building.

The inspiration for the reunion came from my granddaughter Maggie, a recent SU grad who works at Lubin House as Assistant Director of SU Admissions.

Most of the attendees were my Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity brothers and my wife Joanne's Iota Alpha Pi sorority sisters, some of whom we had not seen in 60 years. Not surprisingly, an oft repeated expression was "You look good." And I agree, we do!

One Sammie, Don Cronson, decorated the Lubin House walls with a collection of photographs which harked back to our student years. Many of these pics were peppered by such fellow students as Lou Reed, Steve Rubell, Ian Schrager, Ernie Davis, Dave Bing and John Mackey.

Consistent with the "When We Were Young" theme were the priceless and historic reminiscences we regaled each other with.

There is something very special about the sustenance and fellowship generated by a group of people being reunited while sharing common history and experiences!

What's more, the Lubin House setting was exquisite, the luncheon delicious and everyone behaved admirably. So much so that I'm already motivated to organize next year's reunion with an even more appropriate theme.

Forever Young!!!

CORRECTION! Should read not when we were young, rather should read when we were younger.

I love reunions. I pride myself in being able to recognize people I have not seen for 50 years before reading their name tags. My high school reunions often have elementary school friends in them. College reunions are different. I was the placement director at my college for 7 1/2 years and was active in professional organizations and activities long after that so I have been keeping in touch with fellow alums for longer than one might suspect. I am fascinated by people and what they do with their lives, so I will continue attending these events for as long as I am able.

What will be more appropriate?
How many times to you get up each night? Do your knees hurt. How many surgeries have you had.
