So what’s really changed other than the date on the calendar? 2020 was marked by so much uncertainty – I dare say more than usual – and here we are in 2021.
One of my favorite’s by Sondheim is “With So Little to Be Sure Of” is about being grateful for a beautiful moment in time, “a marvelous moment” despite there being “so little to be sure of.”
We can be certain that the sun will rise in the morning and set in the evening. We can count on Spring following Winter and Summer preceding Autumn which will be followed by Winter and the start of another new year.
“Crazy business, this life we live in,” wrote Sondheim. We have no idea what wonder awaits or when we will experience those marvelous moments. It’s all so uncertain.
The only thing we really control is how we start this year … the rest is a mystery and beyond our control. I started my year with a long run in Central Park early on January 1st. I wrote down my business and personal goals and my goal timeline; I put meetings, appointments and workouts on the calendar – in pencil out of respect for uncertainty.
How did you start 2021?
