There is a unique dive bar in Key West called The Chart Room. I learned of it reading Key West Lou's blog. It is hidden away in the bowels of The Pier House at the end of Duval Street.
It has quite a storied history, including Mel Fisher, Jimmy Buffet and many other Key West characters and luminaries.
To me The Chart Room is the closest approximation of The Twilight Zone I can ever hope for. Once one enters, all bets are off as one sheds all vestiges of "propriety" as we sit at the back table with a cross section of fellow Americans.
Yes, my opening politically charged remarks are intended to engender controversy (and more), but, almost always, we find common ground
Agreeing "It is a great country"!
For some off beat, unexplained, reason, there is a red 2006 Lawyer's Diary on the table and I have taken to finding the corresponding day's page and having everyone agree to meet at the table "Same time next year", sign their name and write something clever.
If you ever vacation in Key West, don't miss visiting and imbibing at the center of the universe and maybe I will be there to welcome you to The Twilight Zone :)
