I heard the following story.
As the sun came up last Sunday, nearly three feet of snow blanketed the development. Cars up and down the block needed to be found and uncovered.
An elderly couple’s neighbors decided to take on the job of uncovering the couple’s cars. This good deed had become somewhat of a tradition in the development over the last few years. As the day started neighbors “called” each car, deciding who among them would dig out for the couple.
The neighbor that “called” the elderly man’s car spent a long time in the cold snow making sure the car was clean and its path to the road clear. By the time he was done, proud of his work, the car looked as if it had been in Florida not on Long Island in a historic storm.
Later that day, the neighbor saw the elderly man and commented about how proud he was of his work. The elderly man, although grateful and appreciative, commented – “I guess you didn’t know. I decided to get a garage so my car wouldn’t be in the snow. That’s not my car.”
So, as it turns out this year another resident in the development wound up the beneficiary of this neighbor’s good deed. I sure hope that neighbor “pays it forward.”
(PS – Does anyone other than my husband get the reference in the title to my blog?)
